Compatibility With Confluence
Note: Version 3.1.1 is binary compatible
Description/Features
A wiki-based checklist for tasks with easy, ajax-driven task completion.
Installation
Please see the instructions on the Installing Plugins and Macros page.
Previous Tasklist Macros
Confluence has shipped with older tasklist macros: {dynamictasklist1} and {tasklist}, This plugin is designed to replace those macros. In order for it to work, the older tasklist macros must be disabled. You can disable the older "Dynamic Plugin Macros" from the Plugin Manager (Administration -> Plugins). Once the older tasklists are disabled:
- When someone views a page containing an older version of the tasklist, the display will show the new format but the page will not be updated.
- On first edit of the tasklist from the UI, the data will be converted to the new format.
The data in the old format is not harmed. Should you wish to revert to the older macro, you must 1) renable the old macros, and 2) revert any page that has been automatically modified (that is, any page containing a tasklist that has been modified) to the earlier version.
Usage
| We have changed the default name of the macro to reflect that this macro is meant to replace both the legacy {tasklist} and {dynamictasklist} macros. You may still use any of the previous syntaxes to create your tasklist, but it will be upgraded to the new storage format the first time the UI is used to modify the list. |
To insert the tasklist into a page, use the following macro.
{tasklist}
{tasklist:My Tasklist Title}
When you view your page, you'll see something that looks like this:

You can add tasks the using the text-entry box. Simply type a task name and click return. Tasks will automatically be inserted into the page.
Regular view
Once you have added tasks, you'll see something that looks like this:

There are several things you can do with tasks:
- Complete/uncomplete: You can use the checkbox to make a task as complete. Once a task has been marked as complete, the taskname will become a lighter color and the progress bar will be updated. Click the checkbox again to mark the item as uncompleted.
- Edit: You can edit a task by clicking on the pencil icon that appears when you hover your mouse over the task. The taskname will become editable and the edit icon will be replaced with a save icon. Make your change and press return to save or click on the save icon.
- Delete: Click the trash-can icon to delete a task.
- Lock: If this locking has been enabled for the tasklist by setting the enableLocking macro parameter to true, you can click the lock icon to prevent the task from being edited, deleted, or otherwise changed.
- Expand: You can click the arrow icon to expand the task details.
Detail View
Once you've expanded the task details, it will look like this:

You can do a few more things here.
- Priority: You can change the priority of the task by clicking on the "High", "Medium" or "Low" radio button.
- Assignee: You can change the assignee of the task by typing in a user or group name, or by clicking on the user or group search buttons to find users and groups.
- Dates: This view shows the date the task was created, and the the date the task was completed, if it has been.
Sorting
The tasklist can be sorted by four attributes: the taskname, the assignee, the priority and completed date. Click on the icon sort order icon to change the order of the sort.
Manual Editing
One of the benefits of Confluence Dynamic Tasklist 2 over previous task lists is that all data is stored in the page. Most people will find it easier to edit the tasklist using the web-interface, but if you want to edit or even create the tasklist directly, you can do so by editing the page itself. You can see an example of the tasklist wiki-markup below.
{tasklist:Things to do before I die}
||Completed||Priority||Locked||CreatedDate||CompletedDate||Assignee||Name||
|T|M|F|||jnolen|Climb Everest|
|F|M|F|| |jnolen|Big game hunting|
|F|M|F|| |jnolen|Drive a Ferrari|
{tasklist}

Also: I can't reorder the items: I drag the right-hand side of an item and all I get is the "Do not enter" sign no matter where I move the mouse. Is that supposed to work, or does the "sort" feature supercede that? If so, I wish I could enable it; let me select a sort mode which is "Drag the items into any order you want" like the old one, and remember that setting.

Icons usually refer to functionality and less to sorting.
Solution: Just add Titles to the columns (Status|Title|Priority|Who) and then underline them. Clicking on these titles will sort ascending/descending
Priority - Expose priority at task list level, not under the open details arrow. Priority is something you need to see in the list view or it makes no sense. Why prioritize items if you can't see their priority level in the list and sort by it by clicking the column header as I describe in Sort GUI above

The only thing to be added would be how to handle Dates and Responsible.
They could be click-in areas just like for Title.
The simpler the thing is, and the faster the data entry on the front end can be, the more people will go gaga over this already very good tool!

Unfortunately, having sub-tasks in the list is not supported at the moment. If you are keen on this feature, feel free to raise a feature request at the plugin's Issue Tracker:
Did you meant to say that you would like to have a sorting order of your own rather than the sorting option available in the dynamictasklist?
If this the case, you may want to try hovering the mouse to the right side of the "delete" icon. Click on the bar, moving your mouse up and down allows you to relocate the tasks location. Having that said, then you are able to sort the tasks according to your preference.
Hope the information helps.
Cheers,
Tony

I do wonder about sub-tasks though. Yes, in principle they are a nice idea.
But if you are going to subtasks, now you are talking more complex project management type stuff, and also things going into layers and being hidden by arrows, etc.
I always try to incorporate GTD methodologies and usability when I look at a widget's interface.
Seems to me that making this thing layered and complex will limit its beauty, ease of use and effectiveness.
There would be 2 alternatives to your layered approach:
Now the [Big Taskk] links to a new page under the current one. There you can put another task list
The only danger here is that now you have disconnected, not easily printable task list dependencies, not so good.
But I'd still suggest KISS on the main list is better than too complex here.

I went to a page where I had a dynamictasklist already and it appeared to be converted to the new format, but no functionality is working. None of the sorting, none of the buttons, can't enter a task, etc. I also see that there is no additional mark-up beyond what I had before in the Wiki Markup view (despite the fact that this version is supposed to contain your task list markup in the page). However, those with spaces had the spaces changed to underscores and stopped working. When I went into the wiki markup and removed the underscores (changing them to just spaces) and added a dynamictasklist closing tag for each one, they worked just fine. The tasks were still there and their information was put into the wiki markup as it should have been initially. I think this must be a bug with the conversion process.

1. The use of the check box to indicate complete / uncomplete task does not have a clear meaning. User are interperationg it as some sort of selection option.

Did you mean to say that you would like to combine all the progress bar for each task list available in the Confluence pages to be rendered in a wiki page? If that is the case, it is not possible to do that in Confluence. Perhaps, you may want to display all the task lists in a wiki page by using the Include Page Macro which allows you to display all the contents of one Confluence page in another page.
If the suggestion above is not an option to you, you may want to raise a feature request at the following:

Not exactly, more a case of creating a number of pages, each containing a TaskList and representing a small project, if you imagine a large project made up of a number of parallel smaller projects, each small project page has the task bar at the top showing you the status of the small project.
I then would like to open a single master page for the combined projects and see each of the sub project page titles, and a task bar for each of the sub projects ie a page full (vertically) of Project Page Title and task bar. Effectively a one page summary of a number of other Tasklist pages.

We are interested in what John is requesting as well. What would be really excellent was if there was support for metadata and the Metadata Plugin, so that there could be a report page created using that plugin's Metadata-Reports macro showing the % of tasks completed and/or the #comp/#tasks ratio.
I think Dynamic Tasklist is excellent. I think the features above would make it a must have for any wiki.

Thanks for reporting this. Indeed, the lock icon has been removed from the latest version of the Dynamic Tasklist 2 plugin.
I believe some of the slideshow shown in the screenshots above are the UI of the older version of Dynamic Tasklist plugin. However, there is an improvement request related to update the screenshots shown in this page being tracked at the following link:

If I drag my tasks to sort it in a particular order, but someone else comes along later and sorts by a field, I lose my custom sorting. We want to sort I items by relative priority, so we don't want to use the default sort option. Looking forward to the forthcoming release. Thanks.

In my dream world for integration between the two products, I'd be able to define a dynamicjiraissueslist with the following features:
This would greatly simplify the workflow between the systems, as for many non heavy jira users they wouldn't even need to head across there, rather they'd live within the literate and context and scaffold rich Confluence pages, while creating and updating well structured task level information stored in the best task tracking repository in the world.
any takers? Anyone know of something like this already in existence or planning?
hope so :o)

There seems to be too much focus on tasks lists being indepedant of Jira, while (as a company) there should be more thinking on integrating the two.
I'd like to be able to link Jira issues to Confluence task lists by hand (e.g. here's associated ticket/task, or pull text based on this jira #)
http://developer.atlassian.com/jira/browse/TASK-139
My other Jira wish has been to have this sort of checklist (stripped down of assignees and dates) to be addable to Jira tickets, as we sometimes have assignments which have very granular subtasks not worthy creating an actual Jira subtasks, but being able to imbed a confluence-like subtask list in a single jira ticket (like a checklist)

We implemented it this way so watchers wouldn't get overloaded with notifications when someone goes in and does a bunch of things all at once to the tasklist. If you'd like to have us add an option to allow this to be configured so that if you've got a list that seldom changes and you do want to receive notifications about when it does change, please file a feature request here .

You meant to say the assignee feature available in the plugin?
To my understanding, the assignee value only refers to the user's username but not the user's Full Name. There is no configuration that I am aware of to fix this.
However, there is an open Improvement request related to this being tracked in the plugin's issue tracker:

I also had a confluence 2.5.4 with the same behaviour. In a Confluence 2.7.1 it scaled up correctly, but i was not able to adopt the shipped tasklist-plugin (1.8) to my older confluence correctly (overwrite version 1.5).
Is 2.5.8 the minimum requirement to use version 2 of this plugin? Does confluence 2.7 any transformation on upgrading that i did not had this problem?
