TimTam status

TimTam has not been updated since Oct 2005 and some aspects may be incompatible with new versions of Confluence. The original author has stopped enhancing and supporting TimTam. This is the start of updating and refreshing the support. Contributions are welcome - please add your comments and suggestions to help the project progress. Help is needed validating this works correctly on various Confluence releases. The current version seems to work about as same as the original released version. It works well for many things and has limitation for others. The best uses for this are:

  1. Intensive editing with multiple pages
  2. Space re-organization with drag and drop
Beta

More testing is required to verify it works well enough on current versions of Confluence. Only tested using a Windows client. Also, ability to respond to issues will be limited. The intention is to leave this in beta for some time as there are bugs, behavior, and missing capabilities that should be addressed.

Description

TimTam is a Confluence rich client that can be used as an Eclipse plugin or standalone.

To say TimTam is cool is an understatement. It's truly awesome and most recommended!

Installation instructions

Eclipse plugin

  • Put jar file into the eclipse plugin directory
  • Restart Eclipse

Standalone client

  • Unzip
  • Run timtam.exe out of the timtam directory

Roadmap

  1. Get a new build and verify basics work
  2. Release as alpha, update page, and seek feedback
  3. Setup a JIRA issue tracker via Atlassian
  4. Move deliverables to Atlassian SVN
  5. Move source to Atlassian SVN (but did move zip of all stuff into SVN, see link above)
  6. Look at old issues in original issue tracker and move relevant entries
    • Moved just a few and left the rest. Prefer to get new enhancement requests from current users.
  7. Plan enhancements based on voting and other feedback
  8. Minimal testing and validated on Confluence 2.2.9 and Confluence 2.4.5
  9. Improved documentation

    great that your tackling the task of reviving the timtam plugin! I have two feature requests (I think they are present in the old issue list, but I want to let you know that we would still be interested in these):

    - copy pages and copy spaces (eg. by drag and drop)

    I don't know how complicated this would be, but it would be very useful to have a kind of "template space" that could be copied into new spaces multiple times by just giving it a new space name every time. Would be very cool! Thanks for your work anyway...

    Hi Bob - My company recently started using Confluence and as one of the administrators I stumbled across this plugin. I love the overall idea of this plugin (especially since I use Eclipse for a number of other tasks already). Unfortunately I can not get the plugin to run in my current installation which I believe is possibly related to the fact that I am running the latest version of Eclipse.

    My current configuration is as follows -

    Eclipse Version 3.3.1.1

    Java Runtime Version 1.6.0_03

    I would love to be able to start using the plugin instead of the standalone client. Thanks again for picking this up and running with it.

    I'm interested in helping to further develop this Eclipse plugin. I would particularly like to add kind of an offline funtionality that enables you to select pages or whole spaces to be downloaded for offline editing and then offer a sync-function to sync it back once online again.

    The problem is, that I can't access the original TimTam CVS. Couldn't you please checkin the sources into the svn of this TimTam revival project?

      That is great news! I have not had any time lately to progress this further. The source is in svn as a zip file (see the link above). Wanted to spend some time structuring it better for svn but ran out of time. Feel free to do it.

      I want to persuade my colleagues to use confluence for all project documents, especially requirements.
      Currently requirements are mostly defined in microsoft word documents.
      Being able to work offline would help.

    After entering the details I get... could not bind to path:  http://localhost:8080/confluence/rpc/soap/confluenceservice-v1.wsdl

    if I hit that same url from a browser,  the wsdl is displayed.  http://localhost:8080/confluence gives me the login page and the installation works as expected.

    i have RPC turned on.  i tried with both anonymous access on/off.  (grasping at straws)

    i tried with Use Proxy checked/unchecked (grasping at straws)

    I did try http://doc.codehaus.org and that returned an invalid user (correct response)

    any ideas?

      Robert, so you got it to connect to http://doc.codehaus.org, but not your local server? Please try to connect to http://confluence.atlassian.com and verify you can log in fully. In the Server Url field just put http://confluence.atlassian.com. Leave Use Proxy unchecked. This should connect as expected. Double check your RPC configuration is ON. Now, you have installed your instance as a context on an app server - that shouldn't make any difference, but I don't currently have a test environment with that scenario. Can you please open an issue for us to continue the discussion on this? What version of Confluence do you have? What app server are you using? Can you send information from the Confluence log? Are you using TimTam plugin or standalone client (shouldn't make a difference either)?

      Another thing to try would be do a standalone Confluence install and see if that works for you.

        Success connecting to http://confluence.atlassian.com Locally I'm running 2.7.1 on JBoss 4.2.  I don't think that's the issue. Attempts never reach Confluence, I enabled Tomcat's access log and that doesn't get hit either, so it looks to be on the Eclipse side. 

        That made me think that it was an IP/Naming issue.  I tried my IP (192...) still no luck, but 127.0.0.1 works. I should I have tried this before.  I'm on Windows XP

        I did try your CLI tool and that works fine with http://localhost:8080/confluence, so another indication it's Eclipse.  I'll try to search down if that's a known issue.  If I find something I'll let you know.

        I can use 127, so I'm good to go.

      Also, when I try to close the page, it asks me if I want to save. When clicking Yes, the whole TimTam instance is closed.

    I'm using the Standalone version of TimTam, Confluence Commercial Server, v.2.9.1.

    Tried connecting to http://my_ip_address:8080/confluence/rpc/soap/confluenceservice-v1.wsdl, and I get a bind error ("Failed to bind to http://....")

    The "Remote API (XML-RPC & SOAP)" setting is ON.

    Is there something I'm missing?  The installation/setup documentation doesn't really explain that much other than "unpack and run"...
