This is useful but I'm looking for a guide to the "built-in" icons - shortcuts really - such as (+) displays a plus icon.

Hi Laura. There are already improvement requests for this kind of feature. Please see CONF-3698 & CONF-14330 for details.

Not looking for an improvement request, just looking for what's already built in. For example, in our instantiation of confluence,

    (*b) = blue star
    (*g) = green star
    (*y) = yellow star
    (*r) = red star
(/) = white check in a green circle ("complete" symbol)
    (i) = white 'i' in a blue circle ("info" symbol)
(!) = black exclam in a yellow triangle ("alert" symbol)
(?) = white question mark in a red circle ("help" symbol)

    Are there others?

See the notation guide under the 'Misc' section for the full list.

        your link is broken (smile)

there is not a 4.x link as far as i can see.

        Inserting Emoticons

Should be the correct link (and they still work for 4.1 as far as i tested.

Thanks, yup, "Emoticons" is what I was after. I hadn't thought to search it that way. I think I was searching under "built-in icons". Might want to label the page that way. I think "emoticon" when I think of :), say, but not of arrows...

The page referred above is now called Inserting Emoticons and Icons. I've added tags to the page for the terms you've suggested.

I am looking for an emoticon indicating new content like the word new in a yellow oval.  Ideally a macro that would be a timer so it would only be visible for 30 days after  the selected date
