Introduction

Confluence comes bundled with the Left Navigation theme. This theme has a navigation menu on the left-hand side of the screen, which can be customised to contain additional links, sections and even macros.

Creating a custom navigation page

Custom left navigation

By default, the left-navigation theme just displays the space icon (or profile icon for a personal space), and three menus: page operations, browse space, and add content.

To add your own content to the top, create a page in your space called 'Navigation'. Put content there that you want to appear on the left navigation menu.

A couple of tips:

  • items in a bulleted list show up as normal menu items
  • use 'h1' to add a section heading for your menu items.

Examples

As an example, create a page called 'Navigation' with the following content:

h1. Search engines

* [Google|http://www.google.com]
* [Yahoo|http://www.yahoo.com]
* [MSN|http://search.msn.com]

This will give a left navigation menu like the image on the side of this page.

You can see another example of customised left-navigation theme on the Codegeist space with its associated Navigation page.

Alternative left-hand navigation

To insert an expandable/collapsible left-hand navigation menu, try the {pagetree} macro, supplied by the PageTree Plugin. You can follow the instructions to add the {pagetree} macro to your Confluence page layout. Note that this looks better if you use the Confluence Default theme rather than the Left Navigation theme.

    When you choose the Left Nav as your global theme, it has an extra configuration item: Navigation Space.

    What is its intended functionality? I was hoping it would let you set one Navigation page that every space using the Left Navigation theme would use, so i didn't have to manually manage one per space,  but that doesn't seem to be the case.

    Hi,

    I'm using the left navigation theme with the pagetree2 macro (http://www.adaptavist.com/display/builder/pagetree2+macro).

    If the tree expands the navigation area (page operations, browse space ) move down and with large trees its quit hard to get the most used buttom "edit".

    Any idea how I can give the edit button an additional place on top of each space but still using the left navigation theme?

    regards

    Joe

      Hi Joe,

      The PageTree2 macro is a third party plugin which is out of our support scope. For customization, I would advise you to direct your questions to our forum and mailing list as there might be other user/developers who have already implemented it and should be able to share their ideas with you. If you have any technical issues regarding Confluence, you can always raise a support ticket at our issue tracker:

      Hi there,

      If you meant to put the custom menu at a position other than the top, you might want to modify main.vmd in WEB-INF\classes\com\atlassian\confluence\setup\atlassian-bundled-plugins.zip\confluence-leftnavigation-theme-X.Y.Z.jar\templates\leftnavigation directory to rearrange the position of the menus.

      Hope this helps.

          Hi there,

          I am afraid that may require more advanced customisations. You might want to contact the author of Top and Left Navigation Theme to discuss more on the issue. Otherwise, you can always direct your question to our forums or mailing list as there might be other users/developers who can share the knowledge with you.

    In 2.8 the left nav looks horrible, at least under IE6 and FF2.  I went to the Codegeist site to make sure I wasn't screwing it up and Codegeist has the same problem.  The h1's have a big grey gap under them (which they did not have in previous versions of Confluence).  Also they've lost the left padding they used to have so now the titles are right up against the edge of the browser.

      I am also having the same problem, i have just upgraded my version of 2.7.2 to 2.8.2 and eventually 2.9 but all the themes that i have installed, i.e. Top and Left Navigation Theme, also the Alternative version all seem to render the navigation on the left hand side really weird, as you have described. Also the new and improved action buttons dont appear i.e Edit, Add and Tools. The only work around is to use the "Default Theme". Does anyone know how to get these other themes that I have mentioned working with 2.8.2, I had a similar result with 2.9 also. Any help would be appreciated.
