There are two special default groups in Confluence:

  1. confluence-administrators: This is a group of 'super-users' who can access the 'Administration Console' and perform site-wide administration. Members of this group can also see all spaces in the Confluence instance.
(info) Any user who is a member of this group has site-wide administration powers, regardless of any other setting. The settings on the Global Permissions screen do not affect the powers allowed to members of this group.
  2. confluence-users: This is the default group for all new users. Permissions you assign to this group will be assigned to all newly signed-up users of Confluence.

Confluence Administrator permission and confluence-administrators group are not related

Going by the names, you would think the 'confluence-administrators' group and the 'Confluence Administrator' permission are related – but they are not. To resolve confusion, we want to make explicit that granting a user or group 'Confluence Administrator' permission is not the same as granting them membership to the 'confluence-administrators' group. Granting the 'Confluence Administrator' permission enables access to only a subset of the administrative functions. Granting membership to the 'confluence-administrators' group, on the other hand, gives complete access.

Other user groups : A Confluence administrator can also group users together into user groups for more convenient administration. Once created, groups become available at the space and page levels to allow for flexible access control. A user in one of these groups will automatically be granted all permissions granted to the group.

Anonymous users : Confluence treats all users who do not log in when they access Confluence as being 'anonymous'. You can grant anonymous 'Use Confluence' permission via the Global Permissions screen. This will allow non-registered users to access pages and spaces in Confluence. A space administrator can then further control anonymous access per space via the space permissions.

Is there a way of listing all the spaces that a particular group has access to?...similar to how you can view a user and see all the groups that person is a member of.  I can't seem to find any option to do this.

    Thank you.

    Is there a way to

    a. attach a Confluence page to a group, so that clicking on the group name takes you to the group page

    b. email the whole group?

Further, logging in from this page appears problematic (smile)

      Hi there,

      a. attach a Confluence page to a group, so that clicking on the group name takes you to the group page

You meant to say, to have a feature similar to clicking on a username would redirect the user to the homepage of the user's personal page? Hence, clicking on a group name would redirect to a homepage of a specific space?
If that is the case, Confluence does not support this. If you are keen on this feature, you may want to raise a feature request regarding this in our Issue Tracker system.

      b. email the whole group?

You may want to give a try to the "Mail Page Plugin" which is shipped with Confluence by default. This plugin allows you to send a page content in email form to specific groups or users. For further information regarding enabling this Mail Page Plugin in Confluence, please see:

Further, logging in from this page appears problematic

Could you please further clarify on the problem that you are encountering? Are there any error prompt when you are trying to login?
Did you try using the "Forgot Password" feature available in the login page to see if you are able to reset your password?

If I have misinterpreted your questions, please further clarify them for a better understanding.

      Cheers,
      Tony

Is there a way to allow space administrators to setup their own groups (pertaining to their space)? For example, if we provide one space for each department within an organization, the space administrator of an IT department may want to create sub-groups within their department (such as executives, managers, and general users) so that some pages can be restricted to specific groups and also is not accessible to users of other departments within the company.

How can you change the name of a group? I only see the "Remove"option.

    1. Jul 30, 2008

      Hi Mark,

Currently, this feature is not available in Confluence. There is an improvement request at CONF-9159 to allow renaming of group names. Please add your comments, be a watcher and cast your vote to increase the popularity of the request. Hope this helps.

    Hi,

I want to know if with Confluence i can sort the groups and create sobgroups within a group or this feature is not available in Confluence?

    1. Dec 12, 2008

      Hi,

If you meant to say that you want to sort the groups alphabetically, then the answer is yes. Confluence does not support subgroups at this moment.

I was wondering if there was a way to restrict a group, that is all groups, "else group x?"

By default all members are part of "confluence_users." We create a new group, but want to restrict them from a space. With many groups it is impractical to restrict viewing to all but one group.

      Hi Patrick,

Unfortunately, Confluence does not have this feature. You might want to try the remote API method using SOAP to achieve this. Here is the example method you can use to give permissions:

Refer the given link for more information:

If your are keen to have this feature in Confluence, feel free to raise improvement request at http://jira.atlassian.com for future implementation. Add yourself as a watcher and cast your vote for it.

    Hi there,

I am wondering if I can get some help regarding the "People Directory" in relation to user groups.  I thought that if a user wasn't in the same group as another user, user number 2 wouldn't show up in user number 1's "People Direcory".

Example: John Smith is an employee of company1 and Jane Doe is an employee of company2, both in those respective Confluence groups and both have been removed from "confluence-users" (it is also set up so they can't see each other's company spaces either).  I swear a few weeks ago I tested this out and Jane Doe wasn't showing up in John Smith's "People Directory" (only people from company1 was showing for John Smith) and visa versa.  I noticed today that this wasn't the case anymore.

Is this a feature that is supposed to be here?  Please advise.

    Thanks,

    Bridget

      Hello Bridget,

The People Directory will simply display all users who has logged into Confluence or who has had a user account created for them. In other words, group membership does not affect the listing. If you feel there is something wrong with the People Directory, please refer People Directory Troubleshooting. If that does not help, feel free to lodge a support ticket at https://support.atlassian.com.

      Cheers,

      Hi,

As I am going pag by slow page true all our groups to fine one... It would be really, really, nice to be able to search for group in the manage groups interface.

I found a similar feature request on this feature in JIRA:

Please add your comments to the discussion, vote on it and add yourself as a watcher for future updates. Also, please bear in mind the following document on how we schedule features for inclusion in our products: Implementation of New Features and Improvements.

How do we search for a group?

With LDAP groups turned on, searching for a local group means scrolling through page after page, and since there is no rhyme or reason to how the results are sorted, it is very difficult to find a group and see who is in that group.

    Thanks!

How Come there is no way to search the groups page?  Because of some aspect of how our Confluence was set up, we have pages and pages of groups to toggle through and no way to find the group you are looking for when a group needs to be edited or changed.

      Hi,

I am afraid that this is not currently possible. However, I have found a similar improvement request. Please add yourself as a watcher, vote for this improvement and add your own comments to this request. hi, if we migrate our confluence instance to a new server, do the groups and users associated with that instance get migrated as-is, or would we need to create the groups again?
