To remove a group:

  1. Go to the Confluence 'Administration Console':

    • Choose Browse > Confluence Admin. The 'Administrator Access' login screen will be displayed.
    • Enter your password and click Confirm. You will be temporarily logged into a secure session to access the 'Administration Console'.
  2. Select 'Manage Groups' in the left panel. A list of all existing groups is displayed along with links to remove them.
  3. Click 'Remove' beside the group you want to remove. You will need to confirm your action before the group is deleted.

Notes

  • Multiple user directories: You may define multiple user directories in Confluence, so that Confluence looks in more than one place for its users and groups. For example, you may use the default Confluence internal directory and also connect to an LDAP directory server. In such cases, you can define the directory order to determine where Confluence looks first when processing users and groups. Here is a summary of how the directory order affects the processing:
    • The order of the directories is the order in which they will be searched for users and groups.
    • Changes to users and groups will be made only in the first directory where the application has permission to make changes.

    See Managing Multiple Directories.

In the version I have (old), if you have set page level permissions for a group and then delete the group, then the page level permission remains and points to a group that you can no longer join.  I only have one deprecated page in this category, so have not experimented with recreating the group or fishing around in the database, as I don't care the page is now read only for all time.  However, prior to deleting groups, I go through and check the group isn't used in space permissions or any page restrictions.  Anywhere else I should be checking?

      Hi,

I believe that's all you have to watch out for especially for the users who have authored content.

In v 2.91, if you want to remove a group, you get a list in which spaces the group is used.

Is there also a possibility to get a usage list with all page permission restrictions where the group is associated to?

    Regards,

    Michael

      Hi Michael,

I am sorry that Confluence does not have this feature. However, you might want to cast your vote and add yourself as watcher to the improvement request below:

What happens if you delete the confluence-administrators group?  Is there a way to add it back?
