Labels are key words or tags that you can add to pages and spaces. You can define your own labels and use them to categorise, identify or bookmark content in Confluence.
You can see the existing labels, and the pages which contain the labels, by Viewing Global Labels.
To remove a label from a page:
- Go to the page that contains the label. All labels are displayed at the bottom of the page below the page content.
- Click the icon beside the list of labels, or press 'L'.
- In the Labels dialog, click on the X for a label to remove it.
- Click Close.

The above procedure only removes a label from a page. The label itself continues to exist, even if there are no pages left to which it is attached, (Browse Space -> Labels). I have not found a way yet to completely delete labels from the internal labels' database.

Almost one year later: My above question has never been answered. Confluence version 2.4.3 allows to move labels from 'attached to a page' to 'suggested' and back. I simply want to have a means to delete some of those 'suggested' labels.

Hallo Pas
Thank you for your comments. The problem may be that your label is a space label, rather than a label on a page. I have added a new topic on removing a space label.
The label should not exist if you have removed it from all pages and spaces. If the label is still there when you go to 'Browse Space -> Labels', you can click the label to see which page(s) or space(s) are using that label.
If this does not work, please would you refer this problem to support.
The list of 'Suggested labels' shows the labels you've used most recently, plus the most popular labels in the space.
Many thanks.

Hello Sarah,
thanks for yor response. In version 2.4.3, the removing a space label does not delete a label, instead it moves it to the 'suggested' bin. That's exactly what I wrote above.
I did report this issue, a long long time ago:
http://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONF-6520?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:all-tabpanel
If you confirm the current version 2.5.x allows to delete a label once for good, we might consider an upgrade.
Greetings

Hello,
Suddenly I can't add labels to new pages on Confluence 3.2. When I set 'label-x' to a new page, the new page is not assigned to that label (looking at the label via Browse -> Labels). Then I have removed 'label-x' from all the pages that were using it. But when I look at this label via (Browse -> Labels) it is still saying that there are pages that are using this label (except for the new page I mentioned earlier). When I click on one of the linked pages, there is no label assigned to it. Why does Confluence still show all the pages that have had a link with this label, but doesn't have that link anymore?
Also when I add a new label to a (existing) page (e.g. 'label-y') it doesn't work anymore. When I go to Browse -> Labels, and looking at 'label-y' the following message is shown: "There are no pages at the moment". How is it possible that the label function doesn't work anymore?
I hope you van help me. Before this problem it worked great.
