Rich Text Editor Overview

All Versions

Confluence 3.0 Documentation

The Rich Text editor provides users accustomed to HTML editing or other text editing applications, an easier and faster way to creating Confluence pages. It allows you to enter content as you would in a Word document, and apply formatting simply by clicking icons on a toolbar.

The 'Edit' screen lets you switch between 'Rich Text' and 'Wiki Markup' edit modes without losing the changes you've made; so you can use a combination of both while editing. For instance, you can use the rich text editor to change the text colour and then switch to Wiki Markup to create links.

You can also set the editor open either 'Wiki Markup' or 'Rich Text' by default, depending on your preference.

You can run the editor in a full-screen editing mode by clicking this icon at the far right of the toolbar.

Rich Text Editing can be disabled

This option is enabled by default. Be aware however that site administrators can disable it. If it is disabled, a site administrator will need to enable it again from the Administration Console before you can start using the Rich Text editor.

The Rich Text Editor

Right-click Context Menu

The Rich Text editor incorporates a right-click context menu that provides an additional mechanism for handling common editing actions available through the toolbar icons or keyboard shorcuts. For more information about the right-click context menu, refer to Rich Text-Right-Click Context Menu.

    as of version 2.4.4, there is a serious problem with color formatting macro and Rich Text Editor. When a link is inserted into a color formatted text block via Rich Text Editor. It will mess up not only the formating but also the link itself.

    As of v2.5, the Rich Text Editor cannot be used to edit or even to look at a page containing {code} tags.
    Opening such a page completely destroys the layout (many lines are merged on a single line) and content (special characters such as _ and * are escaped) of the code embedded in the {code} tags.

    If at least one page of your wiki contains source code formatting, you should not set Rich Text as the default editor.

    A workaround is to use the {noformat} tag instead.

    Does anyone know, in Confluence 2.8, if the switching back and forth between Rich Text Editor and Wiki Markup will screw up some of the wiki codes on the page as it did for older versions? It would be nice to have both choices compatible with each other.

    Hello,

    I know that some macros are not rendered correctly in the RTE and show up as the script itself. Is there a way to set color to the macro so that users who are working in the RTE not modify these elements.

    I tried  to use the color tag but it does not work and breaks up the macros.

    Thanks

      Hi Nana,

      I am afraid that the markup, for instance, "{color:red}{mymacro}{color}" will not be helpful in this case. However, there is an ongoing feature request that addresses the needs to differentiate macros and normal contents in rich text editor:

      You might want to put your comments, be a watcher and cast your vote to increase the popularity of the request. Hope this helps.

    Is there a way to hide wiki code showing up in the rich text editor to simplify the editing UI and make sure folks don't muck up exact wiki code? For example, I'd like to include this wiki markup:

    ||  || Content allowed: 235x335 ||
    |  | !hspacer.jpg! |
    | !vspacer.jpg! | {table:width=235|height=335}
    {tr}
    {td}CONTENT GOES HERE "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat. Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum.""Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore \\
    {td}
    {tr}
    {table} |

    But when someone is in Rich Text edit mode, I'd only like them to see the Confluence table and the spacer images and just be able to type into the "CONTENT GOES HERE" area to fill it up, and not see the red table info. Any suggestions?

    Our Confluence server was recently updated to 2.10.  Since that time users are experiencing lost edits when editing pages with the Rich Text editor.  They enter changes.  Switch to Preview and their changes aren't shown.  Switch back to either the Rich Text or Wiki edit modes and the changes aren't there.  If you start off editing in Wiki Markup the changes are kept.

    I suspect some Confluence or Tomcat configuration was lost in the upgrade but the IT dept has no idea.  Anyone know what causes this and can anyone provide a pointer to docs explaining what to change to correct this problem.

    Thanks.

    Has anyone complained about or addressed the problem with the editor (in Confluence 2.8.2) adding hypertext "&nbsp" (no-break space) instead of regular "space" character as users enter text in the Rich Text space. It seems to happen when the user takes a break from fluid typing. This "&nbsp" sometimes is appended at the end of link text, thereby appending text to the link, which breaks it. Users forget to double check links in the Wiki Markup or Preview tabs. At other times, it just adds an extra space. As far as I can tell, this is the only hmtl code that the Rich Text editor adds on its own. As we are planning to upgrade to v. 2.10, has this problem gone away?

    While double-checking the previous paragraph in the Wiki Markup tab, I noticed that three instances of "&nbsp" have been created in this paragraph. I think that in each case I did something besides fluid input, things like backspacing, inserting text or deleting text highlighted with the mouse. Since this is v. 2.10.1-rc3, this problem obviously has not gone away. I can't train all my users to fix something that shouldn't be a problem anyway. Please look into this for all of us. Thanks.

        Azwandi:

        We have just upgraded to 2.10.2 and I agree that the issue is SOMEWHAT resolved.   characters are still added to the wiki markup, but at least links don't seem to be broken. We see a problem in pages that use excerpts, such as Forum tables using Community Bubbles 1.2. In this case, the   characters show up in the excerpt instead of the space that was intended. For example, see the "new group name" entry on http://wiki.piug.org/display/PIUG/Forum+-+PIUG+Discussion.

        I would like to see elimination of all random   characters except for well defined situations. For example, keep the   when a user explicitly add   to the wiki markup. Another situation is a bit less clear to me. I believe I have seen a user intentionally add multiple spaces in the rich text window in order to "indent" text. It maybe that multiple spaces are automatically reduced to just a single space under most circumstances. If the latter is true, then retaining multiple &nbsp: characters would be useful. If you can't think of other important situations calling for   instead of spaces, please eliminate them in the rich text editor. Thank you.

      Hi Alison,

      The feature has not been removed. In 2.10 the the icon for selecting colour was changed - it is now a capital 'A' with a grey bar underneath it. When you select a colour, the grey bar will change to show the colour you have selected.

      Also, the colour picker now appears in a dropdown, rather than a separate popup window. You can click on a default colour, or enter the hex value, as before.
