Page restrictions control who may view or edit a specific page, within the bounds of the space permissions:

  • View restrictions make the page invisible to everyone except the chosen users and groups.
  • Edit restrictions prevent everyone except the chosen users and groups from editing the page.

You can restrict the page to as many users and groups as you like.

(info) In order to set or modify page restrictions, you need to have the 'Restrict Pages' permission in the space to which the page belongs, as well as permission to edit the page itself.

Setting Page Restrictions

To set restrictions on a page:

  1. Choose Tools > Restrictions. The Page Restrictions dialog opens.  You can also click the padlock icon in the page's byline (if available), or click either Unrestricted or Restricted when editing the page.
  2. Select the restriction option required.
  3. Choose the users and groups who you want to be able to view or edit the page:
    • To choose just yourself, click Me.
    • To choose a particular user or group, type the user's username (or their full name), or the group name, into the Enter ... name box, and click Restrict. You can enter multiple user and group names, when separated by commas.
    • To search for a user or group (if you are unsure of the name), click Person... or Group... (You can read more about searching for users.)
  4. Click Save.

Removing Page Restrictions

To remove restrictions on a page:

  1. Choose Tools > Restrictions. The Page Restrictions dialog opens.  You can also click the padlock icon in the page's byline (if available), or click either Unrestricted or Restricted when editing the page.
  2. Click Remove restriction next to the appropriate users or groups.
  3. Click Save.

You can both set and remove restrictions for different users or groups when using the Page Restrictions dialog.

Notes

When a page you are viewing has restrictions applied, a small padlock icon appears next to the page byline. Clicking the padlock will open the Page Restrictions dialog, where full details on the page restrictions are displayed.

View and edit restrictions apply to all users including space administrators. However, space administrators can remove any restriction on a page. See Viewing Restricted Pages.

    Hello,

I got a question about setting the restrictions.

When I created pages, I did not set any "restrictions."

But, when I tried to allow a person to edit one page in my space, I went to "Edit" and add his username into a list of "Restrict editing of this page." However, he still could not edit this page. Then, I tried to change the "permission" under "sapce admin," and add him to be an individual user in my space, and open his permission to create a page. Then, it works. But the problem is that he can edit all page in my space. This is not my original purpose.

Does it mean that if I expect that I may need to someone to edit some pages, I have to restrict pages to let me become the only persen who can edit pages when I create them in the beginning? That is to say, I have to set restrictions (only to me) for all pages when I create them in the beginning, then if I want to open the permission of some pages to some specific people, I can set a restriction for it later. Is that right?

    Thank you so much.

      Hi YC,

Unfortunately, this is the limitation of the Confluence permission architecture. For more information, please refer to this documentation:

That is to say, I have to set restrictions (only to me) for all pages when I create them in the beginning, then if I want to open the permission of some pages to some specific people, I can set a restriction for it later. Is that right?

Yes, you can solve it using that way if you are comfortable with it. Alternatively, you can try to move the page in the restricted space to a non-restricted space, hence simplifying the overall permission settings. If you would like to view that page in the restricted space, you can use the Include Page Macro in the restricted space.

      Hope that helps.

    hi,

I'm trying to restrict a user from viewing a page but when i go to check and see if they can view the page, they are still able to view the page. I followed the steps and made the restrictions like the guide states above. Did I forgot a step or something?

Try to check if the user belong in any of the groups which is allow to view the page. Even though user is restricted to view the page, but if the user belongs to a group which is granted with the view page permission, eventually the user will be able to view the page.

Also, you might want to check the view page restriction permission of a page via Space Admin >> Restricted Pages

      Hope that helps,

any way to ensure that all site admins always have the ability to edit a page regardless of page restrictions? Its a really a pain to search through the pages in order to unlock.

    Hi,

Is it possible to restrict a page to all for people except for  those who  have edit permissions for that space?

Also is it possible to create a group of users with editing rights in a particular space?

    Thnks,

    Arthi

      Hi Arthi,

Is it possible to restrict a page to all for people except for those who have edit permissions for that space?

I am afraid the feature requested is not available yet. However, I found an improvement request which might be the nearest to your requiremet:

If you are less happy about the improvement request. Feel free to raise the request in JIRA:

Also is it possible to create a group of users with editing rights in a particular space?

If I understand correctly, you want to add edit permission to a specific group. I think that is possible, make sure that
user have the Pages Create permission via Space admin >> Permissions. For more information on space permission please refer to
      this documentation:

How do I provide page level restrictions to Anonymous users?

It appears to me once an anonymous user has view access to a space via the Global and Space Admin restrictions they also inherit view rights to child pages and the ability to pick and choose which pages within the space an Anonymous user can see is not available. Is that the case?

Yes, that is the case. However, I found an improvement request which might be the closest to your requirement: http://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONF-10316

Please add your comments to the discussion, vote on it and add yourself as a watcher for future updates. Also, please bear in mind the following document on how we schedule features for inclusion in our products: Implementation of New Features and Improvements.

Hi, i have a freelance working for me.
We don't have any specified permission except "can_use" for each user.
I'd like my freelance to only access a page and its children. But when i give him "can_use" global permission, he's able to see every space created in the wiki.

Any idea to give him only an access to my page and children ?

    Regards.

Hi, I have been using confluence for over a year now and am very familiar with setting restrictions. However, today when I try to enter names and add them to the restriction list, it is just not acknowledging when I click the 'restrict' button after selecting the correct name. Nothing shows up. So I try it again, with a different name. Again, the same. I am ensuring I have selected all the correct options etc as I normally do so I know that is not the issue. It is almost like the function has been disabled, however, I have checked our permissions and I have full administrative access to all functions.
Could this be a bug by any chance?
I have tried doing this both in explorer and firefox and I am facing the same issue. I have also tested it using both parent and child pages and it won't let me set restrictions on either of them.

The only odd thing I am getting is the following code on the bottom of the page, however I think it is unrelated to this issue:
    #contentTag("spacename", $helper.spaceName) #contentTag("spacekey", $helper.spaceKey)

    Any advice please?

I currently encountered the same problem after upgrading from 3.1.1 -> 3.4.6. A short test later I found out, that it relates to the default theme. I switched to the doc theme for a short while and the function works as expected. Now I will analyse the default theme which got some modifications from the old confluence version during upgrade...

...Problem solved. The inherited custom pagelayout produced some kind of problems. I reset it to the default an applied my changes manually.

Is there a way to set page restrictions to all pages within a space without having to go into each page to do that?

    1. Dec 27, 2010

Sorry to say that there is no way for you to do that but nevertheless, view restriction can be inherited.

Alternatively, a "bulk edit" for page restrictions would be great.

Is there a way to restrict where users can Add pages within a space?  We would like a section of our space to allow people to add pages, but currently as soon as we give someone "Add" permissions they can add pages anywhere in the space.

    Folks,

I was wondering if there was anyway of showing a list of who does have access to a page and who is restricted within a table on the page itself? for example I would like to add who can access this page and who is restricted within a pop kong custom tab, so the author can instantly see who can see what.

    Thanks

While I was setting up my page, I set the page restrictions for me (and a colleague) to view and edit only. Now the page is ready to share and I cannot change the restrictions. The pop-up (from Tools/Restrictions and the Lock) shows who can view and edit the page but does not allow me to change anything. Suggestions?

If a page has Edit Restrictions, is commenting still available to users outside the chosen group?

    1. May 27, 2011

Hi Lis. Yes, users who were not granted with Edit Restrictions permission can still add comments to the restricted page.

is there a way to not allow comments to a page? I have a page with a number of daughter pages and I don't want to allow comments on any of the pages.

    Hi There,

If there are Edit Restrictions placed on a page, why can users that can't edit, add attachments? I figured that would be included in "Edit". Is there anything I can do so that normal users can't add attachments on a particular page? Note that I do want them to be able to add attachments throughout the space, just not on a particular page (and it's sub pages).

    Thanks,
    Bridget

    1. Jun 06, 2011

      Hi Bridget,

If a user cannot edit a page, then they should not be able to add an attachment to it.

If you are not seeing this, then there may be a problem with your instance, or you may have uncovered a bug. Raise a support request if you would like us to look into it for you.

      Cheers,
      Mark

I thought I remembered seeing this at the Atlassian conference, but is it possible to restrict just a section of a page so that just users in a particular permission group can see it and everyone else sees the page without that section?

    1. Aug 02, 2011

      Hi Shannon,

You can achieve this by using the Include Page Macro. Put the restricted content into a source page and add page restrictions. That way, the macro will show the content to the allowed users only, while normal users will see nothing.

      Cheers,
      Mark

Is there a way to restrict a particular version of  a page? Imagine the following use case: Someone accidently added critical content to a document, lets say some admin password. Even when I remove the password, it will still be accessible through the history. Therefore I want this particular version of the document locked.
