We use the special "Meta Issue" issue type together with "contains/is part of" linking to group issues. This way we can group all the issues concerning the documentation PDF layout issues or specific feature groups without creating plenty of components.
To extend this idea we'd like JIRA to somehow support watches for "Meta Issues". I.e. watching the meta issue you recieve all the notifications for concrete issues changes.

i.e.
Story - John is would like to create a new file
-> subtask - permissions must be checked for appropriate authorization
-> subtask - add create file button to page xyz.jsp
-> sub defect - Null pointer exception when trying to create a new file
-> sub defect - file written was 0 bytes
In this case, specifically where you have a team of business people prioritizing work, they want to see the story, not any tasks or defects. In addition, they want to see the estimated time.
Needs:
1. Report that allows you to filter out 'sub' issues
2. Configuration to allow 'sub' issues to roll estimated time up to the 'Story' issue
