Description/Features

Custom field to order issues. With this plugin, any issue list can be ordered in a custom way. Useful for work queues or fine grained prioritizing.

Installation

Installation instructions can be found here.

Usage

Step 1 : Install the plugin according to the instructions

Step 2 : Use Administration Section and select Custom Fields from the Issue Fields header on the left.

Step 3 : Select Add Custom Field (I named my field "Rank") and associate the Issue Ordering field with the appropriate issue types and projects.

Step 4 : In the Administration Section select Navigator Columns from the Issue Fields header on the left. Add your new field to the default issue navigator fields using the Add New Column pull down. I also, Ordered my column to the first position.

Step 5 : When viewing a filter that includes the Issue Ordering field, you have to sort by that field in order to shift the ordering.

The beta-3 version allow you to move an issue to a particular row by typing the row number. If I want the last item on the list to move to the 3rd row, I just type "3" into the field and hit enter.

I put a snapshot of a column with the Issue Ordering field (beta-3 version).

    Hello,

I just test installed the plugin.

But how can I use it?

I don't see any difference in the issue navigator how to order the issues.

    Cheers

      Hi,

to make the up and down arrows appear, you need to click on the column header to sort the navigator by the custom issue order.

Many thanks for this one, simple yet very useful! I've been testing it out for our backlog prioritization (100+ items). Only thing i'm missing is having an option to move an issue straight to the top/bottom and up/down 5 steps. Currently it's very painful when nudging a new high priority issue 100 times upwards...

    Great update on the plugin!

Its going to save us a great deal of time.

Assuming you have the plugin installed, the following steps demonstrate how I go the plugin up and working...

The beta-3 version allow you to move an issue to a particular row by typing the row number. If I want the last item on the list to move to the 3rd row, I just type "3" into the field and hit enter. Saves a TON of time!

    Awesome - it really works!

Is it possible to set editable rightsfor that Order Field?
We would like to set up as adminstrator a ranking of issues which shouldn't be changed by anyone else.

Right now, every single user can modifiy any order list. It would be great if some views/order lists wouldn't be editable for anone.

    Regards,
    Ivan

Hello Jochen, thanks for writing this plugin, we have wanted to be able to rank issues this way for a while, so this fits the bill for us.

    A few comments and suggestions:

    • The installation instructions above are for confluence plugins, not jira,
    • I agree with Ivan's suggestion of having rights to restrict who can edit ordering. A user who doesn't know any better might play with the ordering, especially since the option to reorder is so obvious when they view a sorted filter
    • I'm not sure how to easily change the ranking of items that appear on different pages of a list. For example, if there are 200 items, I might look at the third page (items 41-60), but I can't move one of those items to appear on the first page. Maybe I'm missing something in the way this works.

Thanks for the input. I removed Atlassian's default installation instructions.

      About the other suggestions

      • The plugin checks if you have editor rights to the moved document. I'm not aware of a Jira mechanism for setting rights for just the field (i.e. user can edit document and cannot change order). Because of resource constraints (it's my spare time, after all , there will not be a "hand coded" solution, which means you have to use document level access rights for the moment.
      • Because of the way issue navigators work, the plugin cannot access issues that are not on the current page. As a workaround I suggest increasing the number of issues per page, see here.

      Regards,
      Jochen

I attached a patch that I tried to email to Jochen's email addy at sourceforge but it bounced.  Basically I needed something like this but a little different:

    • Easily editable numerical custom field
    • Values are absolute priorities such that re-orderings can done while filtering if you know the semantics of the values for the entire project/version/ whatever.
    • exportable via excel
    • change history stored

I added another custom field and action that got me what I needed but it was highly derivative of what was already here.

I have installed the plugin and created a field rank. In the detailled issue view I see that each issue displays an individual rank number. The field is not editable. I then configure my Issue Navigator to show the rank column (I tried this as user and as administrator). When I switch to the issue navigator I do not see the column called rank. Any idea what the problem might be?
