Description/Features

Custom fields for sub-task issues to display parent issue summary in column views.

The teams I have worked with have been using JIRA's sub-tasks regularly as they provide great features for priority handling and progress monitoring. There have only been one drawback using the sub-tasks as users can't always figure out the parent issue from column views that only display parent issue key. This plugin allows user to figure out the parent issue context easily without opening the parent issue.

Plugin contains two custom fields: Parent Issue Summary and Extended Summary

Parent Issue Summary Field displays issue's parent issue summary and can be used for sorting.

Extended Summary Field extends the original summary field by providing parent issue's summary to the field.

Usage

  1. Install the plugin by downloading the plugin JAR
  2. Place the downloaded JAR file to <JIRA>/atlassian-jira/WEB-INF/lib folder
  3. Restart JIRA
  4. Activate the custom fields from JIRA administration tools, Custom Fields section.
  5. Done, now you can use the new fields in issue lists

Excellent Tommi! Thank you for this plugin, it certainly eases the pain of using subtasks in Jira. However, I'd like to see subtask's summary showing its parent's summary (not just the key) as the final solution.

Thank you for the feedback! I added another field to the plugin that extends the default summary field. New extended summary field shows the parent issue's summary in the field.

    Hi Tommi,

When you say to "activate the custom fields", how do you do that?  Do I create a custom field of that type and add it to a screen?

     Thanks!

Yes, you'll have to create a new custom field for example "Extended summary" with that type and add it to your columns list. You can follow this tutorial:

Hi.  I like the extended summary field, but when I add it to my issue navigator and remove the default summary field column, ALL the columns become the same width, including the type icon, key etc.  This makes the view very unreadable, as the extended summary is now a little tower of text an inch wide.

Any ideas how I avoid this?  I am running Jira 3.9.

I tried this with our Jira 3.8.1 installation and I wasn't able to reproduce this behaviour. Are you still getting this? Could you post a screen shot?

Good idea. I was developing this more from the subtask point-of-view but by adding this feature it could display subtasks for parent issues as well.

I've added this plug in and added the custom field for the extended summary and parent issue. I've added the extended summary and parent issue columns to my issue navigator, however when i view the issues, neither columns show. I'm using version 3.6.5. Do you know why this is happening?

It might be the JIRA version. I have developed this plugin against 3.8.x so it might not work very well with 3.6.x releases. Are you able to test it out with more recent JIRA version?

No, I'm not able to test it with a more recent version.  My tech guy said he had some issues when trying to upgrade to a newer version.  Some of the features weren't working when he did the upgrade.  He was working with your support team, but wasn't able to figure out what the problem was. Is there any way of making this patch avail for version 3.6.x?

You are probably meaning Atlassian support team? I'm not an employee of Atlassian and they haven't developed this plugin.

You can download source code for this plugin so you can also try to make it work with your Jira installation.

I would still recommend you to upgrade your Jira installation to newer version as it contains many new features compared to 3.6.x.

Love the plugin, but we've noticed on odd problem against Jira 3.9.3.  The extended summary field does not work if you haven't chosen an Issue Type in your filter, or if you choose the "Any" option in Issue Type.  Choose anything else (or any combination) and it works fine.
