Root Cause
JVM font components were missing from Java installation.
Sun's java, packaged by the jpackage project, splits sun's jdk-1_5_0_12-linux-i586.rpm into several separate packages, and customer had not installed the java-1.5.0-sun-fonts-1.5.0.12-1jpp.i586.rpm package.
Solution
Install the missing package and restart Confluence
