We play a lot of poker at the Atlassian Sydney office. Seeing as new players are joining all the time, I thought it would be best if I put up a few pages to give a little introduction, so the first game is a little less daunting.
What do we play?
No-limit texas hold'em. Because that's what they play on TV.
Who can play?
Atlassian staff and friends. If you're interested, ask someone to add you to the sydney-poker mailing-list.
When do we play?
Most friday lunchtimes, we play a speed tournament.
- It costs five dollars to buy in (for which you get $7.50 worth of chips)
- You can only buy in once, and you can't cash out
- Blinds start at 25c/50c and increase every six minutes
- Whoever ends up with all the chips wins all the money
Every four weeks on Wednesday, which makes it every second pay day if you're an Atlassianite, we play a cash game.
- It costs $20 to buy in
- Blinds are 25c/50c (sometimes at 1am someone will say "Hey, let's raise the blinds!", but you can safely ignore them)
- You can buy in as many times as you want, but
- You have to buy in for $20 each time, no more, no less
- You can only buy in if you're completely out of chips
- You can cash out any time you want
What is "The Hammer rule"?
Just because it leads to some absolutely diabolical play, we play "The Hammer" on Wednesdays. Every Wednesday cash game, any player who wins a hand with 2-7 off-suit as their pocket cards must be paid $1 by everyone else on the table.
- Suited 2-7 doesn't count
- The hand must see a flop, winning before the flop doesn't count
- You can win at the showdown, or win just by getting everyone else to fold post-flop
- You have to show your hand and shout "THE HAMMER!"
(Previously, this rule only came into effect if agreed to in advance, but now it's a fixture of Wednesday night games)
