Problem

JIRA is unable to start and shows a 500 error page after a fresh install.

The following appears in the catalina.out

Diagnosis

Environment

  • Fresh installation

Diagnostic Steps

  • Ensure that instance complies with the supported JIRA platforms for your specific version.

Cause

This is caused by the conflicting system JAVA. Verify that system JAVA is the supported JAVA as well.

Resolution

Troubleshoot the system JAVA using below commands:

Edit JAVA_HOME path:
gedit /etc/environment

Replace with below:
export JAVA_HOME="/usr/lib/jvm/oracle_jdk8"
PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/local/games:$JAVA_HOME";

To append the JAVA_HOME changes:
source /etc/environment

Recheck java:
java -version
echo $JAVA_HOME

sudo update-alternatives --config java to change the system java as well.
