Creating, editing, deleting, and hiding projects

As a Jira administrator, you can create projects for all Jira applications that have been added to your site. Note that you can only view and delete a Jira application project if you have access to that application, so as an example, you'll need Jira Service Desk application access to work in a service desk project.

To create projects, you must have either the Administer Jira or Create next-gen projects global permissions. Learn more about global permissions.

How to create a project

Any user with the Create next-gen projects global permission can create and manage their own next-gen project. Learn more about creating next-gen projects.

Only Jira admins who have the Administer Jira global permission can create classic projects. Jira admins create and manage classic projects using schemes.

To create a classic project:

  1. Choose the Jira icon ( or ) > Projects.
  2. Select Create project.
  3. Choose Classic project.
  4. Give your project a name.
  5. To change your project template, select Change under Template. Then, select one of the available project templates (e.g. scrum software development). 

    Project templates appear based on the Jira products you have subscribed to. For example, if you subscribe to Jira Service Desk, you can create projects using the IT service desk and Customer service desk templates.

    You can also create a project with a shared configuration to use the permissions, workflows, issue types and other schemes from an existing project.

  6. Once you select a project type or an existing project for shared configuration, click Create.

    If you're creating a project using a template related to an Jira product you currently do not have access to, Jira will display a checkbox that will allow you to grant yourself access to that application. This will add you to the default group of that application, and you will count as a user for that license.

How to edit a project

  1. Go to your project and click Project settings
  2. Select Details from the sidebar.
  3. Change the project's details and click Save details.

How to change the project type

At some point, you may wish to convert an existing project to a different project type. You can, for example, convert a Jira Software project to a Jira Core project at the end of a Jira Software evaluation period. You can only convert to project types for existing Jira applications.

  1. Go to your project and click Project settings
  2. Select Details from the sidebar.
  3. Change the project's type using the Project type dropdown.
  4. Click Save details.

How to delete a project

Once a project has been deleted, it can only be recovered by reinstating a backup or an XML copy. This isn't the most fun thing to do, so make sure you're prepared to delete the project's issues, versions, and components. Associated schemes, workflows, issues types, or any content that could be shared with another project won't be affected.

  1. Go to your project and click Project settings
  2. Select Delete project from the sidebar.

How to hide (or archive) a project

A 'hidden' project will still be visible to people with admin permissions; regular users won't be able to search, view or modify any of the project's issues.

  1. Create a new permission scheme, and leave all of the permissions empty:
    1. Select the Jira icon ( or ) > Jira settings > Issues.
    2. Click Permission Schemes > Add Permission Scheme.
  2. Associate the new permission scheme with the project that you wish to hide (see the section Associating a Permission Scheme with a Project ):
    1. Choose the Jira icon ( or ) > Projects. Select the relevant project.
    2. Open the Project Summary administration page for that project. (See Configuring projects.)
    3. In the Permissions section, click the name of the current scheme.
    4. Click the Actions dropdown menu and choose Use a different scheme.
    5. On the 'Associate Permission Scheme to Project' page, which lists all available permission schemes, select the permission scheme you want to associate with the project.
    6. Click the Associate button to associate the project with the permission scheme.

As an admin, you will still be able to see hidden projects. People without admin permissions will not be able to see hidden projects.
