Transitioning an Issue

JIRA workflow statuses map to columns on a board.

(info) To configure these mappings, see Configuring Columns.

To transition an issue to a different JIRA workflow status on a board:

  1. Click the Agile link's down-arrow in the top navigation bar, then select your preferred board from the resulting dropdown menu.
  2. In the Active sprints (Scrum board) or Kanban board (Kanban board), transition an issue by dragging and dropping the issue from one column to another (see  Screenshot 1 below).
    • When you start dragging an issue, you can only transition the issue to columns whose background turns blue. When the issue is hovered over the target column, the blue background turns green.

    • If the target column is associated with more than one status then, when the issue is hovered over that column, each status will appear as a separate section with a dashed outline (see Screenshot 2 below). Complete the transition to the appropriate status by dropping the issue onto the section of the column.

    • It is not possible to transition multiple issues by dragging them to another column.

  3. If a dialog box opens for your workflow transition status, you must complete all mandatory fields (indicated by a red asterisk) before submitting the form.

(tick) You can also transition an issue via Keyboard Shortcuts if you prefer.

(info) Please note:

  • To map JIRA workflow statuses to columns in a board, see Configuring Columns.
  • You can only transition an issue if you have permission to move that issue to the status in the JIRA workflow to which the column is mapped.
  • JIRA Agile will respect your JIRA worklow configuration and will trigger all your JIRA workflow validations, conditions, functions and notifications on the transitions. (See Configuring Workflow.)
  • Once all the sub-tasks of an issue have been completed, it's time to resolve the issue itself. So when you move the last sub-task to the 'Done' column, JIRA Agile will prompt you to move the parent issue too. If you resolved the sub-tasks in native JIRA instead, a button will be displayed on the parent issue the next time you visit the Active sprints/Kanban board.

When an issue is in a column with multiple statuses, is there any plan to support changing from one status to another while within the same work column without going into JIRA?  Perhaps by selecting a keyboard key while dragging (dragging without a key select would still allow you to change the Ranking within the column)?

Is this a bug or designed that way? Not being able to move from Resolve to Close (within same column)

We feel it would be great to be able to move several cards to another column. Doc says " It is currently not possible to transition multiple issues by dragging them to another column. It is possible to move multiple issues within the same column"

Are there plans to implement moving multiple issues between columns / to the next status?

      Hi Marcus,

You may want to watch this issue: GHS-9581 - As a user I want to be able to drag & drop multiple issues in work mode Open

      Kind regards,

Question: Im in the Kanban Board - and when I transition a Card from one column to another, ie., from ToDO (not started) to In Progress, it automatically assigns the card to me. I do NOT want this to happen. What should I do?

    Thanks in advanced.

      Hi Alfred,

It sounds like the workflow for your project is configured to assign the issue to the current user when the Start Progress transition occurs. The issue assignment is done via a post-function that is part of the transition. You will want to remove it from the transition.

In JIRA, navigate to the workflow for your project. In the workflow designer, click the desired transition (transitions are the lines between status boxes), then click Post Functions in the panel that displays. There should be a post function named 'Assign the issue to the current user.'. Remove it from the transition by clicking the 'x' icon (shows when hovering over the transition).

      Kind regards,

    Step 2 above says:

In 'Work' mode, transition an issue (or issues) by dragging and dropping the issue from one column to another (see  Screenshot 1 below).

    • Use <Ctrl> or <Shift> to select multiple issues.
(info) It is currently not possible to transition multiple issues by dragging them to another column

The second underlined sentence seems to be saying that you cannot do what the first underlined sentence is telling you to do. Which is correct?

      Hi Jim,

The text in the bullet point is correct. You cannot transition multiple issues by dragging them to another column. I've updated the page to reflect this. Sorry for the confusion.

      Kind regards,

Can I set transition text visible in columns with single Status? (Your Screenshot 1 above; it would be better for us if transition is visible also in Done column.)

Can I manage the order of multiple statuses in column? (Your Screenshot 2 above: what if I want that Close issue is higher in column than Resolve issue (and I have used swimlines for other filtering purposes?) Now the order is (or I think it is) the order you created transitions = transition (id) = (number) (which is kind of hard to change after you created the best-ever-workflow (smile))?

    Thank You

As Niina suggests, I'd also like to be able to see the transition name/title in the column the card/issue is being dragged to even when there is only one status you can drag too.

This would add more clarity to the action the user is performing by dragging the issue, as the title of the column and the action the user is performing as part of the transition are not always the same (or could be worded better).

We usually have both Resolve and Close mapped to Done.  If someone has permissions to move to Resolve but not to Close, will they still be able to move an issue to Resolve in the Done column, or will it prevent them from moving the issue there at all?

In some projects, we generally want to leave the parent unresolved when the last subtask is "Done." We'd really like to disable the prompt. Is there a way to do that which doesn't involve restricting the user roles who can close the parent or leaving the last column without any statuses mapped?

    The documentation says:

    • If a dialog box opens for your workflow transition status...

What are the conditions that make a dialog open? I have a new, custom workflow status that I've introduced in my workflow and mapped to a column (it is the only status mapped to that column). When I drag items into the column and transition the issue into my new status, the dialog shows up but I don't need to change any fields other than the status. I'd prefer it if the dialog box didn't appear and the status was simply automatically updated.

Can I configure something to achieve my desired behavior?

I'm getting a issue, may be a bug..
Unable to see "Start Progress" and even while checking "where's my field?", unable to see "Workflow transition".

But if i'm creating a new issue in the same project, i'm able to see workflow transitions....!!!

I'm seeing both the status and transition names showing in my column when dragging an issue into that column, but only when I am digging the issue in from an adjacent column, and only when transitioning forward in the workflow - e.g. both show when moving issue from "Selected for Dev" column to "In Progress" column, but no labels are seen in the column when from "In Progress" back to "Selected for Dev".

This seems like a bug - can someone confirm?
