Summary

This article aims to address a scenario where the Bamboo version displayed in Windows's "Add/Remove Programs" menu differs from the version shown in the Bamboo User Interface. This discrepancy can arise in scenarios where the old version wasn't removed prior to the upgrade process, which on recent versions involves unzipping Bamboo instead of using an executable installer. This article provides a safe solution to remove an old version from the system that's no longer being used.

Environment

The solution has been validated in Bamboo Data Center 9.2 but may be applicable to other versions.

Solution

It is advised to create a full backup of Bamboo before proceeding. Please refer to the Bamboo Backup Documentation for guidance.

To safely remove the old version from Windows's "Add/Remove Programs":

  1. Open the Windows Control Panel and navigate to Programs > Programs and Features.

  2. Right-click on any of the column headers from the list of programs and select "More."

  3. Check the "Location" box in the list so that installation paths are also shown and click OK.

  4. Verify that the installation paths for the old version of Bamboo shown in Windows (e.g., 9.2.9) and the current, running version are different.

    1. You can verify the current, running install folder path by going to Bamboo Administration > Overview > System information and verifying the path under "Current running directory".

    2. The path must be different from what's shown under "Add/remove programs" for a safe removal.

    3. If the paths are the same, please reach out to Atlassian Support for assistance.

  5. Once you've ensured the paths are different, go to the old install directory in Windows Explorer (e.g., E:\Program Files (x86)\Atlassian\Bamboo) and delete the following files:

    • BambooConsole.bat

    • InstallAsService.bat

    • StartBamboo.bat

    • StopBamboo.bat

    • UninstallService.bat

  6. Move inside the bin directory on that same folder and delete all the contents.

  7. Proceed to uninstall the old Bamboo version through Control Panel > Programs and features. If you hit any errors, you can click Ok & Retry.

The idea of the steps above is to remove any script files that the system might invoke, scripts that could interfere with your existing, running Bamboo service.
