Google Drive macros

Google Drive macros are provided by the Confluence Google Drive add-on.

Your administrator will need to install this add-on before you can use these macros.

Are you still using Google Drive for some documents?  You can embed Google Drive files, including documents, spreadsheets and presentations directly into your Confluence page.

To add a Google Drive file to your page paste the link into the editor and auto-convert will do the rest.  Alternatively you can add the Google Document, Google Spreadsheet or Google Presentation macros to the page, edit the macro, and drop in the URL.

If the file is not public, Confluence will prompt people to authenticate (with their Google credentials) before they can see the file for the first time.

Using the Google Drive macros

To add a Google Drive macro to a page:

  1. In the Confluence editor, choose Insert > Other Macros
  2. Find and select the required macro

Speeding up macro entry with autocomplete: Type { and the beginning of the macro name, to see a list of suggested macros. Details are in Keyboard Shortcuts, Markdown, and Autocomplete.

To edit an existing macro: Click the macro placeholder and choose Edit. A macro dialog window will open, where you can edit the parameters of the macro.


Parameters are options that you can set to control the content or format of the macro output. Where the parameter name used in Confluence storage format or wikimarkup is different to the label used in the macro browser, it will be listed below in brackets (example).




Google Drive URL


This is the URL of your Google Drive file. You can get this URL from the address bar in your browser or using the Get Link option in Google Drive.



Height of the embedded document. Confluence will default to Google's preferred size for the type of file (document, sheet or slide).

Show link to open in Google Drive yes Use this option to add an "Open in Google" button. It's a quick way for people to jump from viewing the file on your page to editing it in Google Drive.

Installing the add-on

You'll need to be an administrator to install the add-on. 

To install the Confluence Google Drive macro add-on:

  • Go to  > Add-ons > Find add-ons
  • Search for Confluence Google Drive
  • Follow the prompts to install the add-on. 

Data Security and Privacy

In order to provide its services, the Confluence Google Drive add-on saves the following configuration data:

  • your confluence host key
  • your confluence user id
  • your Google Drive API refresh token
  • your Google Drive API access token

Google Documents content is not stored by the Confluence Google Drive add-on.

Data in production instances of Confluence Google Drive is stored in Postgres databases in Amazon's cloud offering, protected by username/password credentials. No data is sent to services apart from Google Drive API, Confluence Google Drive add-on, your Confluence instance and the infrastructure used by the Confluence Google Drive add-on (currently Micros and Amazon).

All communications between Google Drive API, Confluence Google Drive plugin and Confluence use HTTPS to prevent eavesdropping.

Revoking access

Users can revoke access to the Confluence Google Drive macros in their Google Apps account settings. 

Previous Google apps macros

The Google Drive macros replace the following macros (that were only available in Confluence sites that used Google Apps authentication):

  • Google document (gdocument)
  • Google presentation (gpresentation)
  • Google spreadsheet (gspreadsheet)

These macros stopped working when Google shut down the API they relied on. There is no replacement macro for the Google documents list (gdocumentlist) macro. 

Wiki markup example

Wiki markup is not available for this macro. You cannot add this macro via wiki markup.
