Problem

When attempting to Edit in Office or use the Edit Document feature in Confluence, the Office application opens along with a certificate prompt. Clicking OK on the certificate prompt opens a blank document.

Environment

  • Windows 7/10

  • Office 2010

  • SSL

  • Firefox

Diagnostic Steps

Cause

SSL is configured on the Confluence server. Confluence uses WebDAV to provide the Edit in Office functionality. WebDAV requires the client to send a certificate. If the client does not have a certificate, the server and the client can negotiate for other authentication mechanisms. See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/954809 for more details.

Resolution

Import Confluence's certificate following Microsoft's KB: Import or export certificates and private keys.
