Problem

An admin may have a Space Template that they would like to promote to a Global Template. There doesn't appear to be a way to do this via the UI.

Diagnosis

Environment

  • Confluence

Cause

Currently, native Confluence functionality does not offer the admin a way to promote a space template to the global template list. There is an open feature request on this functionality :  CONFSERVER-59999 - Getting issue details... STATUS

Workaround

It is possible to simply port over the template content manually into a new global template using the Confluence Source Editor.

    1. Install the Confluence Source Editor add on
    2. Edit the space template and open the source editor by clicking the <> near the upper right hand corner of the editor
    3. Copy the XHTML of the template
    4. Create a new Global template and save it.
    5. Edit this template now and open the source editor by clicking the <>
    6. Paste the source in and save.

(warning) The template variables cannot be migrated with this method, you need to redefine the variables in the destination template.
