How to view Windows application errors using Window Event Viewer
Purpose
Sometimes Atlassian Support will ask users to check the Event Viewer and see if any application errors logged. The purpose of this guide is to go over the basics of the Windows Event Viewer, which is a tool natively included in Windows that logs application and services events. This can be helpful when troubleshooting events such as application and service crashes.
Solution
How to Open the Event Viewer
Note that the following steps can differ between different versions of Windows, but the steps are generally the same.
Start Windows Event Viewer through the graphical user interface
- Open Event Viewer by clicking the Start button
- Click Control Panel
Click System and Security
Click Administrative Tools
Click Event Viewer
Start Windows Event Viewer through the command line
Open a command prompt.
To open a command prompt, click Start , click All Programs , click Accessories and then click Command Prompt .
As a shortcut you can press the Windows key + R to open a run window, type cmd to open a, command prompt window.
Type eventvwr and click enter.
How to View Events
Typically, you will want to expand the "Windows Logs" menu and see if there are any errors under "Applications" or "System". An error will be identified by a red exclamation mark describing the error. You should also have the option to export the logs by right-clicking the section and selecting "Save all events as...".
