No users are able to log into Confluence after an upgrade

No users (external or local users) are able to login to Confluence. All users were stuck at the login screen whereby Confluence always redirects users back to <confluence-base-url>/dologin.action regardless of a correct credential or not.



  • Confluence running behind a reverse proxy server. Eg. Nginx

Diagnostic Steps

  • This issue will still persist after disabling or bypassing the proxy server.
  • The upgrade was completed without any error. 
  • No error in the all the logs, console, or even the Web GUI.


You might have been using maxPostSize as a proxy server parameter in server.xml file to determines the maximum size in bytes of a POST request.

According to Apache Tomcat 8 documentation :

"The limit can be disabled by setting this attribute to a value less than zero."

However, for some of the earlier version it was:

"The limit can be disabled by setting this attribute to a value less than or equal to 0"


If the parameter was set to 0 : maxPostSize="0". Please set the parameter value to -1 : maxPostSize="-1", then restart Confluence.
