Symptoms

When opening the link browser, a message appears:

There was an error opening the link browser, please try again

The log files contain  NoClassDefFoundError: com/wily/introscope/agent/trace/IMethodTracer

2010-10-25 16:55:32,714 ERROR [Spring executor 18\] [osgi.container.felix.FelixOsgiContainerManager\] doLog EventDispatcher: Error during dispatch.
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/wily/introscope/agent/trace/IMethodTracer
at com.atlassian.plugins.rest.module.RestDelegatingServletFilter.<init>(RestDelegatingServletFilter.java:41)
at com.atlassian.plugins.rest.module.RestServletFilterModuleDescriptor.<init>(RestServletFilterModuleDescriptor.java:28)
at com.atlassian.plugins.rest.module.RestModuleDescriptor.init(RestModuleDescriptor.java:60)
at com.atlassian.plugin.osgi.factory.UnrecognizedModuleDescriptorServiceTrackerCustomizer.canFactoryResolveUnrecognizedDescriptor

Cause

  1. This may be due to CA Wily Introscope instrumenting Confluence's JVM. The way that REST plugin is loaded via OSGi is not compatiable with the Wily Introscope agent.
  2. Using a version of Java < 1.6.0_4

Resolution

First Cause

Disable the Wily Introscope agent for Confluence JVM by disabling the jmx listeners as it shut off the jmx debug ports and that makes Wily Introscope cannot connect.

Second Cause

Upgrade the JDK past 1.6.0_4, eg. JVM 6 Update 17. Do not upgrade to JVM 6 Update 18 or later due to a stability issue, refer to 'There was an error opening the link browser, please try again' Error when Opening the Link Browser
