Viewfile cannot render PowerPoint and PDF files when the file extension is uppercase

Symptoms
Using the viewppt or viewpdf macros gives the following error:

The file conversion cannot handle uppercase extensions. This is a known issue created at CONFSERVER-17216 - viewfile macro can't convert .ppt when extension is upper case. Your comments and vote on that issue are very much appreciated.
Workound
Rename the files to use lowercase extensions:
EXAMPLE.PPT - > EXAMPLE.ppt
EXAMPLE.PDF - > EXAMPLE.pdf
