Problem

When browsing some pages in Confluence, you may discover that the page does not load correctly. For example, macros and plugins may not render correctly

The following appears in the browser console (F12 Developer Tools):

Failed to open <url>
Out of memory

Diagnosis

Environment

  • Internet Explorer 11

Installed Add-ons in Confluence

  • Gliffy

Diagnostic Steps

  • Large numbers of Gliffy diagrams are present on the page
  • Can other browsers view the page without problems? (When testing with Google Chrome, ensure you use a version that is not affected by Aw Snap errors in Google Chrome)

Cause

By default, Gliffy Diagrams use the HTML5 viewer which is more resource intensive.

Gliffy Support have offered two workarounds:

Workaround One - Disable the HTML5 Viewer for all documents:

  • Log into Confluence as an Administrator, and visit "Gliffy Configuration"
  • Select "Disable HTML5 Viewer" and save the changes
  • The images will now be rendered as PNG files that consume less browser resources.

Workaround Two - Disable the HTML5 viewer on individual diagrams

  • Edit the Confluence page (you may need to access this page via another browser if IE is having problems)
  • For each Gliffy Diagram on the page, select it and click "More" on the toolbar
  • Deselect "Interactive HTML5 Viewer", then click Update
  • Save the page once all diagrams have been updated
