Setting up JIRA for the first time.

Begin by clicking on the "Administration" button on the top of your navigation bar.
If you do not have this button you are not a JIRA administrator, please ask your JIRA administrator for access.

Adding a Project

A good place to start is to add your first JIRA project. Click the Project tab in the left column and then select Projects from the menu. In the main screen click Add Project.

For now we shall just keep it simple and add in only three fields:

  1. Name
  2. Key
  3. Project lead

Let's leave the rest of the fields with the default values, we can always edit them later.

Essentially a Group is a collection of users.

Adding Project Roles

The difference between a Group and Project Role is basically ease of administration.
By using Project Roles you may be able to greatly reduce the number of groups, permission schemes and notification schemes in your JIRA system. Read more here.

You should still have the Users, Groups & Roles tab selected in the left column. Now select Project Role Browser from the menu. Type in a project role name and then click Add Project Role.
Repeat this step for all your project roles.

Fill in the user details, you can uncheck Send Password Email if you like, then click Create.
Repeat this step for all your users.

Assigning users to groups and project roles

Adding users to groups

You should still have the Users, Groups & Roles tab selected in the left column. If you have lots of users it is easier to add users to a group rather than adding groups to a user.
So to do this select Group Browser from the menu. In the main screen click on Bulk Edit Group Members.

Adding users to Project Roles

Again, if you have lots of users it is easier to add users to a project role rather than adding project roles to a user.
You should still have the Users, Groups & Roles tab selected in the left column. Now select Project Role Browser from the menu.
In the main screen click on Manage Default Members for the project role you wish to add users in to.

Here you can add users or groups directly into the project role. Select the Edit button on either option to add them in.

Repeat this step for all your project roles.

Start using JIRA

Congratulations on adding your users, groups, project roles and also your first project!
You can now use JIRA with the other default settings. You can add issues and assign them to users.
Once you get the hang of it, you can then further customise JIRA's fields, screens, and finally workflow.

Video Resources

You can watch a video of Part 1. The video shows you an example of one user being added to a group and project role.

We also have an extended video that will show you how to Add Your First Project.

The videos is a .mov file which can be played in Quicktime(free).
