Problem

Clicking the "Edit in Office" link from a Confluence page that has a Microsoft Office document embedded into it causes the Office application to crash, instead of opening the document in the application.

Diagnosis

Environment

  • Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, or 10
  • Microsoft Office 2010

Cause

This issue is caused by the October 13, 2015 update for Office 2010 (KB3055034).

Workaround

The workaround is to uninstall the update by following the instructions under the "How to uninstall this update" heading on the KB article then restarting your computer.

You may see the update listed multiple times, be sure to uninstall all of them.

Resolution

The resolution will need to come in the form of an updated patch from Microsoft.

Statement from Microsoft on the release page of the KB3101521:

You may experience the following issue after you install this update:

  • Assume that you are prompted for credentials when you try to open a document from SharePoint in an Office 2010 application. After you enter the credentials, the Office 2010 application crashes. This issue occurs because of a known issue that exists in update KB3055034 which is cumulatively included in this security update.
Microsoft is researching this problem and will post more information in this article when the information becomes available.
