The Office Connector allows you to edit attached office files in their native application (such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint or OpenOffice) and save the file right back to the Confluence page. No need to download and re-upload the file.

(warning) The Office Connector is only available for some browsers, operating systems and applications, check the Office Connector Prerequisites before you start for the combination that will work best for you.

Troubleshooting

Check out the Office Connector Prerequisites for the combinations of browsers, operating systems and office applications that are supported. Here's some common issues:

  • Using Chrome? You can't edit Office documents as Chrome does not support WebDAV clientsSee CONF-23322.
  • Using Firefox? You'll need to install the WebDAV add-on. See Installing the Firefox Add-On for the Office Connector.
  • Using Internet Explorer? You can only edit documents in Microsoft Office. OpenOffice is not supported.
  • Using Mac OSX or Linux? You can only edit documents in OpenOffice. Microsoft Office is not supported. See CONF-17250.
  • Not seeing the Office Connector options? Your system administrator may have disabled all or part of the Office Connector.

    See Configuring the Office Connector.

You can find more troubleshooting info in the Office Connector Limitations and Known Issues knowledge base article.

  1. Hi,

after I upgraded my personal wiki from 2.10.3 to 3.0, the _edit office document_ function doesn't work anymore (the one when you move your mouse and click just above an office (word/excel) document, shown with the {viewfile} macro). The name of the attachment isn't shown when the mouse hovers over, it remains 'hidden'. Foreground and background color are the same. You can select the filename.

Edit in word (via the tools menu) is working, as well as the WebDav functionality.

Is there something which needs to be configured (and which I overlooked) ?

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards, Herman.

    1. Hi Herman,

I noticed that you have raised a bug report for this issue and it has been resolved now. However, for the benefit of others, I will include the link to our Knowledge Base which documents this particular issue. For others who has similar problem, you can refer to this documentation

      Hope this helps.

      Cheers

We have the same problem except we are unable to use the Edit in Word functionality as well.  Has anyone found a solution to this?

    1. Hi, there. I hope that you find JSashi's comment above useful. If you have a different issue, feel free to clarify.

I attached a word document to my page and used

Error rendering macro 'viewfile' : No attachment name specified
to view it in the wiki.  However, it lost some of its formatting.  It seems to have stripped out extra spaces between words.  This is problem as I am trying to depict a report format and spaces are important.  It is also not show the text highlighting color in Confluence.

    1. Hi,

The reason why it seems to have stripped the extra spaces is due to HTML treating multiple spaces as one. You can edit the same document and you will realise the formatting will still be retained in the Word Processor. As a workaround, you could possibly use a hidden table (table without borders) to format your report.

As for the text highlighting, I guess this is a limitation of the Office Connector plugin. I have tested the usability with a few users and realized that users may not figure out how to edit the document without clear explanations.

    • When you click on the document name, it opens the document for editing but you can save it locally only and need to upload it again if you want to post the changes.
    • When you click on "Edit", you can modify the attributes of the document but not the document itself.
    • When you click on "View" you can view the documents but there is no indication that you have to mouse over to the top of the document just to get the link that will open up the document for editing.
      Very confusing....

    I would suggest to:

    • Replace between the functionality behind the "View" and the Document name so click on the document name will open it for WebDav editing. Click on "View" will open it in MS-Office and allow saving locally
    • Change the caption on "Edit" to "Properties".
    1. Hi,

When you click on the document name, it opens the document for editing but you can save it locally only and need to upload it again if you want to post the changes.

This is a weird behavior, the Office Connector should allow you to edit a Word document from within Confluence and save it back to Confluence (without having to save it locally and re-upload the document again). Most probably you have run into Read-Only problems in the Office Connector. Please follow the steps in the document provided to troubleshoot the problem.

If problem still persists, please feel free to raise a support request at http://support.atlassian.com/. Also, please include the information requested here in the support ticket.

When you click on "Edit", you can modify the attributes of the document but not the document itself.

Maybe you are confused by the word "Edit", it is actually meant for editing the document attributes. Modifying the document should be done by Office Connector.

When you click on "View" you can view the documents but there is no indication that you have to mouse over to the top of the document just to get the link that will open up the document for editing.
      Very confusing....

This is documented under Step 2. Open the document in your office application, under point 1, could you double check on that?

      I would suggest to:

      • Replace between the functionality behind the "View" and the Document name so click on the document name will open it for WebDav editing. Click on "View" will open it in MS-Office and allow saving locally
      • Change the caption on "Edit" to "Properties".

Thanks a lot for your suggestion. We'd love to listen to all suggestions that would make Confluence better. From my personal opinion, since the document can be opened by WebDav for editing (which is the main purpose of this feature), you can also save a local copy by clicking on the File > Save As when the document is opened by word processor. May I know if this has fulfilled your requirements?

As for changing the caption on "Edit" to "Properties", you are welcome to raise a improvement request at http://jira.atlassian.com. Please write down your comment, cast your vote, and add yourself as a watcher for future updates. It will then be implemented according to how we implement new features and improvements.

Is it somehow possible to edit an attached office document directly from the site search page? At the moment I have to click on the "Show" link and then have to click the "Edit Document" button.

    1. Hi,

I am afraid that this is not currently possible. Feel free to raise a feature request at http://jira.atlassian.com and describe in detail how you require this feature to work. Is there a way to show that a user is editing the current document?  Similar to editing a page where it just notifies you someone has it open.  Thanks!

    1. Hi,

I am sorry to say that this feature is not currently available in Confluence. However, I have found a feature request here which is related to your question.

Please feel free to add yourself as a watcher, vote for this feature and add your own comments to this request. For further details on how we include new features and improvements, you might want to read this page.

Does Office Connect work with Windows 7 (it isn't listed in the OS section)?   I am receiving the "read-only" issue when clicking "edit in office" on a windows 7 computer.  I made the change on the workstation for Excel to open in compatibility mode.  This functionality works fine on other computers.

    1. Hi,

This is a known issue being tracked here. This workaround works fine with me.

For more details, please refer to the this page: Troubleshooting Read-Only problems in the Office Connector.

      Hope that helps (smile)

We are having problems with the "Edit Document" button always showing (previously it only appeared with a mouse over). Also, clicking the button in FireFox no longer works and we have to resort to using IE to edit documents. Any suggestions for resolving these issues would be much appreciated.

  10. I am having issues editing document on a Mac. I downloaded NeoOffice & the patch for Firefox so that the document will open in NeoOffice when the 'Edit Document' button is clicked. A prompt for a username & password comes up & you are able to edit the doc in NeoOffice. However, saving the document will just save it to your computer, not back to the site. Any suggestions?

Disappointed that Office for Mac and OS X 10.8 (most contemporary Mac OS X) is outside the scope of supported features....

Chrome is a much more mainstream browser....

  12. Using Windows 7 and IE 9 (and FF 15) when I try to open the excel file to edit it an error appears:

The Internet  address "https://confluence.....xlsx" is not valid."

    Any suggestions about remedies?

  13. Is support for Windows 8 coming soon? I use this feature all the time and now I have to go back to my old machine just to edit a document.

  14. When the "Edit Document" button is disable for a user

What I have to do for solve this problem?

This problem has relation with space permissions?

We had lots of problems with this functionality. I can only recommend using GoEdit-Plugin for Confluence, which works like a charm in our company. It´s also not restricted to Office like the Office-Connetor, so we can now use it for any kind of attachment. Especially our marketing department use it a lot for MindManager and their graphics in Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop and the like. Best of all GoEdit works on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X, so now even my boss can edit attachments with his beloved MacBook Air...(smile)

  16. I would have to agree that this sounds like a great idea, but I cannot get it to work.  Has anyone had success getting the connector to work with Firefox 20.0, Open Office 3.4.1 and Confluence 5.1?  The file that opens is empty and a non-descript error message window pops-up.  I have a screen shot of the error . . . it states "Error reading data from Internet.  Server error message: ."

Hi, we have problems with embedding documents that contain graphics.

The graphics all get broken and are shown "in front of" the entire page so that it is even in front of the comment field.

What do we do wrong? And how can we change the problem? To save the document first as pdf and embed it as a pdf is not what we want because then the graphics are too small and I think there should be another easier way.

    Thanks in advance.

I can't get the Edit Document link to work in IE 11.  Is anyone else having this issue?  I'll try Firefox.

    1. Internet Explorer 11 is not yet supported in Confluence.  You should have more luck with Firefox.

    2. Anonymous

IE11 is changing the cross-browser check-method, and not supporting the old mechanism that Confluence uses anymore. Thats why you get the message "Firefox or Internet Explorer is rquired to use this feature." when hitting the edit Document link in IE11.

      http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ie/dn423948(v=vs.85).aspx

As Rachel Robins says, Confluence is not yet supporting IE11. I'll hope they soon do. Are there any ETA of such an update, Rachel/Atlassian?

  19. When will there be support for Chrome?

  20. I am unable to download an old version of Open Office as suggested in the Mac requirements. This does not work with 4.0.

  21. When will there be support for Chrome?

    1. You can follow this issue here  CONF-23322 - Editing attachments in Office fails with Google Chrome Open .

  22. Looks like the Chrome Editing bug has been around for some time. Are there plans to address this issue? I will be a major issue in our decision to purchase confluence.

  23. It's impossible to edit any Office documents with cyrillic filename in Firefox.

The bug is open  CONF-33805 - Could not open for edit XLS with cyrillic name in Office Excel macro in Firefox Open
