Symptoms

The Epic label (or tag) is not showing in the issue list of the backlog view of a SCRUM board, although it is showing in the issue details view:

Environment

Any Jira Software version from 7.0.0 to 7.13.18.

(warning) No longer applicable for any Jira Software version from 8.0.0.

Cause

The board doesn't recognise the Epic Tag or Label for Epics that are not retrieved by the board filter.

Basically, when Epics links created from multiple projects in the Agile board, the Epic tag/label will not appear in the agile board itself unless you add the respective projects in the board filter. This will also have all the epics from the second project displayed in the epics column.

(warning) Note that this behavior is only true up to Jira 7.13.18. For Jira versions from 8.0.0, the Epic tag/label will appear in the board, even if the Epic was created in a Project with is not part of the JQL query configured with the board.

Resolution

If Jira is running on any Jira 7.x version:

  • Solution 1:
    • Include Epic in the Board's Filter and then refresh the board page again.
    • You can change the board filter to something like the following:

project = "Sample Scrum Project" OR (issuetype = Epic AND project = Project2 ) ORDER BY Rank ASC
  • Solution 2:
