Symptoms

Some operation will throw stack trace that has

java.lang.IllegalStateException: No output folder

As a side-symptom, you might find that you are unable to add new users to your JIRA instance, getting Communications Breakdown:

In your browser, you get a NetworkError: 500 Internal Server Error

Cause

There is a problem with the file permission especially if the instance is started up using different users.

Resolution

  1. Check the permission for the JIRA Installation directory
  2. Check the ownership of the JIRA Installation directory
  3. Grant the permission or change the ownership of the JIRA installation directory according to this page.
