Symptoms

The following message appears in the JIRA console output:

Jan 15, 2015 4:43:05 PM org.apache.catalina.core.AprLifecycleListener init
INFO: The APR based Apache Tomcat Native library which allows optimal performance in production environments was not found on the java.library.path: ...

Cause

This INFO message is simply a notification that Tomcat was unable to find the APR.

JIRA, by default, runs inside the the Apache Tomcat webcontainer, which provides the web server that hosts JIRA. By default, Tomcat will look for the existence of the Apache Portable Runtime (APR) on your system, if APR is not found, it will use NIO instead (https://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-8.5-doc/config/http.html).

The APR provides certain performance benefits over BIO, but no performance benefits over NIO, and also *no* functionality benefits - JIRA will function perfectly well without it.

There is no reason to take any action unless directed to do so by one of our support engineers as a result of a performance issue. If you are having performance issues, please raise a support request with our engineers at https://support.atlassian.com.

Information

As of Tomcat version 9.0 TLS and http/2 is supported, it is highly recommended to use an APR setup with openSSL as this will offer better performance over HTTPS.

Resolution

You do not need to do anything.
