Summary

Make Epics visible as issue cards on the Active Sprint section of the Scrum board.

Environment

Company-managed Scrum software project in Jira Cloud.

Solution

To view the Epics on the Active Sprint section, you need to add the Epic to a Sprint. The Epics are visible in backlog only in the Epic paned and can't be dragged and dropped to a Sprint. To add them to a Sprint, follow these steps-

  1. Go to Setting > Issues > Custom fields (or directly go to https://<site name>.atlassian.net/secure/admin/ViewCustomFields.jspa?page=1&searchFilter=sprint ) and ensure that the Sprint field is available for all projects and all issue types under context.
  2. Go to the Project Setting > Issues > Screens and ensure that the Sprint field is added to the View and Edit screen being used by the Epic-type issue.
  3. Open the Epic issue. You can find all the Epics in the Timeline view or in the Epic panel in the Backlog.
  4. Select the active Sprint in the Sprint field of the Epic.

Once done, the Epic will be visible in the Active Sprint section.

Note:

  • The Epic will still be visible in the Epic panel in the Backlog. The backlog list is designed to showcase items that can be assigned to SprintsEpics, due to their typically larger scope, are not assigned to Sprints. Instead, Epics should consist of child issues with estimates, and these estimates are used to monitor sprint commitments, burndowns, and velocities.
  • In a company-managed Kanban board, you have the option in the Board setting(Configure board) > Columns to view Epics either in the Epic panel or on board as a card.
  • Performing these steps in a Team Managed project does not make the Epic visible on the board. Here you need to use the Timeline or Epic panel to view the Epics.
