No upgrade option for plugin in UPM

Symptoms

There is no 'Upgrade' button in the UPM(Universal Plugin Manager). See screenshot for example of expected options:

 

Cause

The cause of this is currently unknown. Please see workaround section for upgrading the plugin.

Workaround

  1. Go to Atlassian Marketplace
  2. Search for the affected plugin and download the latest version compatible with the version of JIRA you are running.
  3. Install the plugin manually as explained here: Installing a JIRA plugin manually
