We're updating our terminology in Jira

'Issue' is changing to 'work item'. You might notice some inconsistencies while this big change takes place.

Link subtasks, work items, and pages to a work item

Use links to point to web pages, documentation or even other work items for yourself and others when resolving a work item using the actions listed just under the work item’s summary.

Create subtasks

Track what you need to do to help resolve a request by creating a subtask for the work item. \

  1. Open a work item.

  2. Select Create subtask ().

  3. Enter the name of your subtask, then select Create.

  4. Keep creating more subtasks, or select Cancel to finish.

If other work items relate to the one you’re working on and their details could help add context, you can link them together. Linking work items doesn’t change the work item in any other way. You can either link an existing work item, or create a new work item and link it.

  1. Open a work item.

  2. Select Link work item ().

  3. Search for an existing work item to link, or select + Create linked work item to create a new work item.

  4. If you searched for an existing work item, choose how they relate to each other, then select Link.

  5. If you created a new linked work item, fill in the work item create form, then select Create.

To link work items that are done, search for the exact work item key, otherwise the work item won’t appear in the search.

You can link up to 2000 work items to a single work item.

You can also link any Confluence pages that have information related to the work item you’re working on, or external links if they help provide context.

You need to have a linked Confluence space to link a page.

  1. Open a work item.

  2. Select Link page ().

  3. Search for and select the page to link.

  4. Select Link.

You can add up to 2000 links to an work item. This includes:

  • web links

  • Confluence pages

  • links to an external work item on a different Jira instance

  • links to other Atlassian products.

Some apps can provide information in ways a description and other details can’t. Diagrams and charts are two common types of content that apps provide, but many other options are available.

Your Jira site needs to have installed Atlassian Marketplace apps to link app content.

To link app content:

  1. Open a work item.

  2. Select the app’s icon under the work item summary.

  3. Complete the next steps, depending on the app.

If you're a Jira admin, you can find and try new Atlassian Marketplace apps right from the work item view. Select the ••• quick-add button under the work item summary and choose Add apps.
