This page describes how to add a Federated Search web part to a SharePoint search results page.

1. Navigate to a SharePoint Search Results Page

Open a browser (preferably IE) to SharePoint where you want to show federated Confluence search results. This is typically on the search results page within a search site. An easy way to get to get to a search results page is to simply perform a search.

You need to have an existing Search site within SharePoint already. This is a SharePoint site that is based off of the MOSS 2007 Search Center site template or the MOSS 2007 Search Center Lite site template.

2. Add the Federated Search Web Part

  • Make sure you are logged in as a site administrator or designer as you will need to edit the page.
  • Choose Site Actions -> Edit Page.
  • Click "Add a Web Part" in the zone in which you want to show the federated Confluence search results. This is typically the Right Zone, but can be any of your choosing.
  • Check the "Federated Results" web part then click the Add button.

If you do not see the "Federated Results" web part then you need to go to the Site Collection Features (go to Site Actions->Site Settings->[Go to top level site settings]->Site collection features) and Activate the Office SharePoint Server Search Web Parts feature.

3. Configure the Federated Search Web Part

By default the Federated Search web part may show Live Search results. To have it show your Confluence results, do the following:

  • Edit the web part properties by choosing the Edit menu on the web part and clicking Modify Shared Web Part.
  • Change the Location drop down to your the Federated Search Location you created in Create a Federated Search Location within SharePoint.
  • Optionally modify the Results Per Page setting in the Display Properties section.
  • Optionally check the Show Loading Image setting in the Display Properties section.

There are some other settings you can look at as well. Note that setting the title will have no effect as this will come directly from the title when configuring the OpenSearch plugin as described on Install the OpenSearch Plugin within Confluence.

When you are done editing the web part properties, click OK (near the bottom right of the page) and then Exit Edit Mode (near the top right of the page).

4. Try Federated Search to Confluence!

Now you can try doing a search within SharePoint and see what your federated search web part shows you. The example below shows Integrated Index Search results on the left and Federated Search results on the right.

If you click "More Results" it should take you directly to a search results page in Confluence.

The Integrated Index search results on the left can show search results from multiple sources that are all indexed by SharePoint whereas the Federated Search results on the right only show search results from one federated location. You can, however, add multiple Federated Search web parts to the page to allow for showing search results from multiple federated locations (such as multiple Confluence installations or other sources).

We have seen the "null" search results sometimes with the OpenSearch plugin from Lunatech and have not found a way to prevent this from showing.
