MOSS 2007 shipped without the ability to crawl web sites such as Confluence that use Forms Based Authentication (FBA). There are several ways to update MOSS to provide this functionality. If you think you may already have SharePoint updated you can skip the options below and you will be instructed to install the hotfix later if there is a problem (note that installing the hotfix is not the only solution as discussed below).

Caution

  • Any of the fixes below may require a reboot of your SharePoint server(s) and that you run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard after installation (Start -> Administrative Tools -> SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard).
  • If you must use Remote Desktop into your SharePoint server(s) to perform any of the updates below, it is recommended you run Remote Desktop in console mode ("mstsc /console").

Here are the options for FBA crawling functionality within SharePoint. Only one of these needs to be installed.

Option #1: Install the July 2008 SharePoint Infrastructure Update

This basically provides the latest crawling and federated search capability already provided to Search Server 2008. Click the link above for more details.

Warning

The July 2008 Infrastructure Update has been known to cause issues with farms that use Alternate Access Mappings. To learn more read the blogs from Joel and dwinter.

Option #2: Install WSS and MOSS Service Pack 1 released in December 2007

This can be a relatively involved process unless you have the simple all-on-one-server SharePoint install, but is recommended as it has several fixes for SharePoint. As the involved installation process discusses, MOSS SP1 must be installed after WSS SP1. Click the link above for more details.

Option #3: Install the June 2007 FBA/CBA Hotfix.

If you want to change your SharePoint installation as little as possible, this may be your best choice. However, installing Service Pack 1 is highly recommended. Click the link above for more details.
