Enabling SharePoint to search Confluence can be a little tricky depending upon your configuration. In addition, there are some nuances on the features of search that can be confusing. This page attempts to assist with this configuration as well as shed light on the features.

This page assumes you have already performed the SharePoint Search Configuration. If not, please visit that link and perform the steps outlined there.

Troubleshooting SharePoint search can be divided into two areas which should be diagnosed in the order below:

Crawl Configuration and Execution
Query Configuration and Execution

Troubleshooting Steps

Before digging too deep on the troubleshooting steps below, please carefully review the crawl/query configuration and execution steps above.

Getting Zero Confluence Search Results

Verify that you have performed the SharePoint Search Configuration, then follow the steps for Troubleshooting Crawl Configuration and Execution and, if necessary, Troubleshooting Query Configuration and Execution.

Cannot Search Attachments

This is likely because the attachments are not being crawled. Copy the URL for the attachment and determine if it is in your crawl log by pasting the URL into the "Find URLs that begin with..." text box as discussed in Troubleshooting Crawl Configuration and Execution. If the URL is not there, verify that you have performed the Fine Tuning Crawl Configuration.

My Confluence Scope Shows Zero Items

When looking at your scopes from Search Settings within your Shared Service Provider (available from SharePoint Central Administration) it will show that your Confluence scope has zero items. This is normal and due to the items being security trimmed when looking at them from the search administration screens where there is no context into how to communicate with Confluence web services. If you look at "Search Scopes" from a site collection administration and you have setup your Confluence settings from the root site in your site collection, you should see a non-zero value for your Confluence search scope. See FAQ item here and blog here for more details.

Cannot Search Some Confluence Content

See the issue above about searching attachments. If the Conflence page title has an ampersand or a dot in its title this is a known issue. See CSI-252.

Cannot Search Multiple Confluence Installations

This is a known limitation. See CSI-109 for more details.

Cannot Manage Confluence Search Source

From the Shared Service Provider if you click on the Confluence Search Settings you may get a message like "No scope named "<n>" could be found" under certain circumstances. This is a known bug. See CSI-247 for more details including a workaround.

Known Issues

Below are a list of known Search Issues. Some of these items are bugs, some are features.
