You can enable or disable user-installed plugins through the Universal Plugin Manager (UPM). Disabling a plugin suspends its operation in your application without permanently removing it, so that it can be easily enabled later. Disabling plugins is useful for troubleshooting plugin-related issues.

In general, you should never disable system-installed plugins. Disabling system-installed plugins can have serious effects, and may render the Atlassian application inoperable.

If you want to remove a plugin from your application instance completely, refer to Uninstalling a Plugin.

You can disable user-installed plugins individually or all at once. To disable all user-installed plugins, use safe mode.

On this page:

Disabling a plugin

To disable a user-installed plugin in your application:

  1. As an administrative user, navigate to the Manage Plugins page.
  2. Find the plugin you want to disable in the installed plugin list by searching or browsing to the plugin.
  3. Click the Disable button.
If prompted, restart your application to have your change take effect.
Once the plugin is disabled, its features are immediately removed from the application. For instance, if you disable the team calendar plugin in Confluence, existing pages that use the calendar will display an 'unknown macro' error.

Enabling a plugin

To enable a user-installed plugin in your application:

  1. As an administrative user, navigate to the Manage Plugins page.
  2. Find the plugin you want to enable in the installed plugin list by searching or browsing to the plugin.

Disabling or enabling all plugins (using Safe Mode)

Running your application in 'safe mode' disables all user installed plugins at once. All plugins that were disabled when you entered Safe Mode will be re-enabled when you exit Safe Mode.

To enable safe mode:

  1. As an administrative user, navigate to the Manage Plugins page.
  2. Click the Enable Safe Mode link at the bottom of the page.

The 'Do you wish to continue?' dialog box appears.
  3. Click the Continue button to confirm the operation.
All user-installed plugins are disabled and your application now runs in safe mode, as indicated by the message on the page.

You can now individually enable or uninstall plugins. When finished, exit safe mode by clicking one of these links in the Safe Mode banner:

  • Exit Safe Mode and restore the previous configuration restores your plugin configuration to its state before you entered Safe Mode.
  • Exit Safe Mode and keep the current configuration keeps all changes made to your plugin configuration while Safe Mode was enabled.
