DVCS workflows for Bitbucket

The two distributed version control systems (DVCS) that Bitbucket Cloud supports are Git and Mercurial. Both are open source systems that you can use from the command line or with an installed client (like SourceTree).

While Git and Mercurial have distinct differences, the basic idea is the same. Whichever one you use depends on what your team is looking for out of a DVCS solution. The following table includes the basic workflow for both.

Basic Git workflow Basic Mercurial workflow
  1. Update/create files
  2. Add changes to repository history
  3. Commit changes to local repository
  4. Push changes to Bitbucket
