Problem

Links and attachment clicks are broken on Windows 10. However the links can be copied and pasted over to the browser to access it. When clicking on the link or attachment, user will see this error:

Diagnosis

  • Check if your default browser works by creating a URL on your desktop (that's valid) and then click on it. If the same error message shows up, there is an issue with the default settings. Check your default program settings for your browser in Windows 10 and see if it has anything listed, or reinstall your default browser completely.
  • Switch to a different browser (as default) and see if it works.

Cause

  • The issue is not specific to Hipchat. When you click the link, it sends a request to Windows to open up the default browser (Internet Explorer).
  • For some reason, Internet Explorer was set to run in Compatibility View which caused the problem.

Resolution

Turn off Compatibility View from the Internet Explorer settings.
