The web app (also called the web client) allows you to override any warnings about SSL certificates (Hipchat Server generates a self-signed certificate on first boot) which will allow you to upload/view images and files.
However, the HipChat desktop apps allow you to override a warning about SSL but they will not have full functionality until a 'trusted' SSL certificate chain is installed in HipChat Server.
For the HipChat Windows/Linux apps, the client loads the root certificates from the OS level keystore. If you need to add a certificate from at the OS level for these platforms, see below:
- Windows: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc750534.aspx
- Ubuntu: http://askubuntu.com/questions/73287/how-do-i-install-a-root-certificate)
To add a root level certificate on a mobile operating system:
- iOS: email yourself the Root CA (or certificate to be trusted) and open it and choose Install Now, e.g. http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/flexsys/information/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.ibm.acc.8731.doc%2Finstalling_mobile_app_iOS.html
- Apple offers a utility for managing device profiles: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1465
- Android: http://wiki.cacert.org/FAQ/ImportRootCert#Android_Phones_.26_Tablets or https://coderwall.com/p/wv6fpq
After adding the root certificates, restart the device and log into HipChat. Previews should populate.
