This version of Hipchat Server is no longer supported

This article applies to a version of Hipchat Server which is beyond the Atlassian End of Life policy, and is no longer supported.

When was my version deprecated?

The following versions have been deprecated:

  • Hipchat Server 1.3 (EOL Date: Aug 17, 2017)

The following versions will be deprecated soon:

  • Hipchat Server 2.0 (EOL Date: Jun 17, 2018)
  • Hipchat Server 2.1 (EOL Date: Dec 8, 2018)
  • Hipchat Server 2.2 (EOL Date: May 30, 2019)

You can read more about Atlassian's End of Life policy here

You should upgrade to a more recent version of Hipchat Server as soon as you can to take advantage of new features, and security and bug fixes. If possible, you should also consider deploying Hipchat Data Center instead.

Problem

When importing Hipchat Server OVA to a VirtualBox, the console output has ceased after the messages, "Starting CPU interrupts balancing daemon" and "Done", and does not accept input while the expectation is admin should be able to log onto the main console for the first time after server deployment with the following credentials:
Username: admin
Password: hipchat

As a result of this, Hipchat Server first-time boot initialization process doesn't complete. You may also notice there are several VMWare processes running, including vmware_checkvm and vmtoolsd, each of which consumes an entire CPU the whole time the server is running. Also, Admin may be able to log onto the server as admin user through SSH however the "hipchat network" command would hang and never completes.

Diagnosis

Your machine is running on Phenom II X4 processor.

Cause

This is a hardware dependent issue which happened only if VirtualBox guest settings has paravirtualization enabled with KVM on Phenom II X4 processor. Further discussion on this can be found in this bug report: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1251656

Resolution

Update paravirtualization setting to "legacy".

Expand for more details on paravirtualization...
--paravirtprovider none|default|legacy|minimal|hyperv|kvm: This setting specifies which paravirtualization interface to provide to the guest operating system. Specifying none explicitly turns off exposing any paravirtualization interface. The option default, will pick an appropriate interface depending on the guest OS type while starting the VM. This is the default option chosen while creating new VMs. The legacy option is chosen for VMs which were created with older VirtualBox versions and will pick a paravirtualization interface while starting the VM with VirtualBox 5.0 and newer. The minimal provider is mandatory for Mac OS X guests, while kvm and hyperv are recommended for Linux and Windows guests respectively
and
VirtualBox allows exposing a paravirtualization interface to facilitate accurate and efficient execution of software within a virtual machine. These interfaces require the guest operating system to recognize their presence and make use of them in order to leverage the benefits of communicating with the VirtualBox hypervisor. Most mainstream, modern operating systems, including Windows and Linux, ship with support for one or more paravirtualization interfaces. Hence, there is typically no need to install additional software in the guest (including VirtualBox Guest Additions) to make use of this feature.

Alternatively, the problem may be resolved by deploying Hipchat Server on other VMWare products, such as VMWare Fusion. This problem has only been observed when deploying Hipchat Server to VirtualBox with AMD Phenom II X4 processors.
