Problem

  • Hipchat Video does not offer an option to use the Apple Cinema Display camera.  The only options available to select for the Cinema Display are the display's speakers and microphone.

Environment

  • Hipchat Desktop Client for Mac, version 4.29.0.732
  • Apple MacBook Pro attached to an Apple Cinema Display.
  • Mac OS Sierra (10.12.x)

Diagnosis

  • The Hipchat desktop client only offers one choice in the camera's popup menu, which is the MacBook's camera.

Resolution

  • This problem is more specific to Mac OS, and not necessarily an issue with Hipchat.
  • This can be resolved by opening up a command line terminal on the MacBook and issuing the following command:

    sudo killall VDCAssistant
  • The VDCAssistant process opens any time an application attempts to use the process.  Sometimes the VDCAssistant does not properly close from an earlier application's use of the camera, resulting in the camera staying in use and being blocked by other applications.
  • Users not comfortable with the command line can also kill the VDCAssistant process via the Mac OS Activity Monitor.
