Problem

  • Hipchat Data Center includes some emoticons that may be considered inappropriate in some work environments.
  • Removal of these emoticons has not been trivial in past Hipchat Server releases, and the removed emoticons are always restored during an upgrade.

Resolution

Beginning with Hipchat Data Center 3.0.1, it is now possible to permanently remove these emoticons using the steps below.  These emoticons will not be restored whenever the Data Center is upgraded.

  • Log in to the command line console of any Hipchat Data Center node.
  • The syntax for removing the emoticon is as follows:

    curl -XDELETE -H "x-hipchat-group:1" -H "x-hipchat-user:1" http://localhost:8080/v2/emoticon/<shortcut>
  • <shortcut> refers to the name of the emoticon as it would appear when typing it in a chat room.
  • For example, to remove the fu emoticon from Hipchat Data Center, use this command:

    curl -XDELETE -H "x-hipchat-group:1" -H "x-hipchat-user:1" http://localhost:8080/v2/emoticon/fu
