Problem

When trying to log in to a chat session on Hipchat Server, the user receives an error stating "You reached the maximum number of sessions in Hipchat.   Try disconnecting some of your clients"

Diagnosis

Environment

  • Hipchat Server and Client, all versions.

Cause

The user has too many chat sessions open with Hipchat Server.  Unused sessions need to be disconnected before the user can start any new ones.

Resolution

To disconnect any open, unused sessions in Hipchat Server, the user must:

  • Log in to their Account Settings on Hipchat Server via web browser, for example:  https://server.example.com/account
  • Under "Account Settings" on the left side of the page, click "Chat Sessions"
  • On the "Chat Sessions" page, the user will be presented with a list of Chat Sessions that they currently have open.

  • Click the "Disconnect" link to clean up any Chat Sessions currently not in use. The "Last Active" column will help determine which ones have been open the longest without any activity.

  • Once the unused sessions have been disconnected, the user should be able to log back in and start a new chat session.

Additonal Notes

On Hipchat Server, there is no way, currently, for an administrator to centrally manage user sessions. Users must disconnect any extra sessions themselves by logging into their account and performing the steps above.
A feature request is open with Hipchat Server to provide this functionality to server administrators in future releases. If you are interested in seeing this feature included, please add yourself to the request below so you can add comments, track the feature, and add upvote it:
