Problem

In JIRA Data Center old or abandoned nodes are showing as Active but not alive, even though they aren't in use anymore

Cause

When a node is removed from a cluster without gracefully shutting down JIRA first, that node doesn't have a chance to send an OFFLINE status to the database.

Resolution

Before you remove a VM or AWS instance from the Data Center Cluster, gracefully shut-down JIRA by using the jira-stop.sh script in <JIRA_INSTALL>/bin, before killing the AWS instance or powering off the VM.
