After a JIRA upgrade, unformatted code appears in some field in the "Create Issue" page

Symptoms

In some fields (mainly in the "Create Issue" page), some unformatted code is being presented instead of the field itself as shown below:

Cause

During the upgrade, some vm files have been corrupted or not properly upgraded.

Resolution

To resolve this problem you will have to replace some of the VM files for the default ones from a clean JIRA install. These .vm files must be from the same JIRA version. For example, if you have upgraded to JIRA 6.0.4 and you are facing this problem, then the files that will replace the corrupted ones must be from 6.0.4 as well.

  1. Shutdown JIRA;
  2. Get a new install of the same JIRA version which you've upgraded to;
  3. Copy all the content from this location (from the new installation):
    atlassian-jira/deployments//current/exploded_war/WEB-INF/classes/templates/jira/issue/field/
  4. Replace the files from the same location above on your current install;
