Summary

Possible to change or hide the names of the default statuses like "To do" and "In Progress"

Environment

Jira Software

Solution

Yes, you can change the default statuses into another status from:

  • Settings > Issues
Select statuses under Issue attributes and edit the name.

Kindly note the below things when you change the default status:

  • The status category ( To Do, In progress and Done ) will remain the same.
  • When you make the changes, it will make the corresponding changes to all the workflows associated to the projects which have this status associated.
  • The workflow also will be updated with the new status.

Now if you want to hide the statuses from the corresponding projects, you could just remove them from the project workflow.

  • Kindly note you can only remove statuses from inactive workflows. Make a copy of the workflow which will be inactive and then remove the statuses.
  • You can then assign it to the project when you're happy with it.
  • When you remove a status which has existing issues, then it will need to be moved to another existing status.
