In some cases general users might try to export a large number of issues to excel which causes slowdowns and affects all other users. JIRA Administrators might want a way to limit or prevent general users from being able to export large number of issues to excel.

The information in this page relates to customizations in JIRA. Also, please be aware that customizations done by directly modifying files are not included in the upgrade process. These modifications will need to be reapplied manually on the upgraded instance.


  • Create a file named (if the file does not currently exist) directly under JIRA Home
  • In, set the following parameters
  • The above example will limit the number of issues that all users can export to 100 at one time, but allow users in jira-administrators group to bypass the limit
  • Users in jira-administrators group can bypass the limit by modifying the URL:
    Right click Export > Excel and copy the URL, for example


    Change the end of the URL (replace tempMax=100 with maxResults=99999) such as the example below and enter the URL in browser to export the excel file:
